Hi everyone. My 11 years old Bulgarian sport horse has coffin joint problems, probably Djd. His naviculars are fine. He was positive at the nerve block, and his ultra sound in the tendons and ligaments is clear, so IT IS the coffins. The xray showed a light exostosis and he had a joint injection (2 cc hyulyronic acid – 1 cc amikacin-1 cc alfutop- 100mg depomedrol). However, it didnt work and he is still lame.
Is it common for the injections not to work the first time?
Should I repeat, or should I try sth "biological", like IRAP, or patelet plasma?

(He is getting cosequin as a supplement and bute as pain killer, and has round corrective shoes and had a 5 months rest of which a 3 months cold sea therapy (saved the ligaments) and has cold treatment (ice) and poultice everyday.)

Still. Lame. What can I do? Anybody with anything similar?

Usually you would see some relief from those injections. But in each an every case like you describe, the first thing you need to do is understand what a healthy foot should look like, then compare your horse's feet to that and make changes to achieve a healthy shape. This is the best way to resolve coffin joint pain diagnosis.

Agreed, I would look to feet. 20 years ago I had similar, if I went through the same today I would be pretty certain I would go barefoot, I'm fairly knowledgeable about it, it's not as simple as pulling the shoes off, so proceed with caution. Improving hoof function, easiest without shoes, is what I'd recommmend.

Thanks. We know what the problem is. Lower ringbone arthritis and a small remodelling at the end of the coffin joint. Navicular is fine. My vet says that the xray doesnt look that bad and he should have responded to the injection. Yet he did not. We are doing prp today.
But the question was: is it usual that horses may no respond to the coffin injections?
If I were to repeat it or not, my vet decided not to repeat and try the Patelet reach Plasma. Has that worked for anybody?
Any feedback would help, please!!!

How does going barefoot help the hoof function? Is it recommended for Djd/ arthritis?
Any feedback would help, please!!!
