Coin operated hot horse showers for livery yard-do they exist?

Can anyone tell me if these type of showers are actually available and if so , where from? We are having a new stable block built which will have separate wash area and my clients would love love love a hot wash if possible! I would like to be able to provide this depending on initial outlay but could definitely not afford to include it in the cost of the livery. Sooooo, I am hoping it is possible to be able to give them what they want but at the same time, apart from the initial cost, it won't cost me anything to run it? Can this be done?:( Any advice much appreciated by all of us!

Tokens would probably be the way to go - better for security and more convenient for users not to worry about change. You might have to think carefully about the timing on it as some equines will always take longer to wash than others. I'm sure practice runs would sort out an appropriate time per token to be fair to you as supplier and your liveries as end users (lucky liveries if they end up with a heated wash facility this winter!).

I was hoping to be able to have a choice of time allowed and coins? I.e. sy 50 for 15 mins if you just wanted a quick wash off or are just washing socks sy and maybe a 30 min option for £1? I don't want clients paying for hot water they won't use so this would be ideal but doubt it's an option?! Maybe I should invent one myself!!

The ones I have seen run on calor gas bottles - could you not just get the liveries to pay a percentage of those, depending up on how many horses they have use it?

They don't need an electricity supply and run off a cold water hose.

i understand the concept, hot showers would be lovely for them. but it might actually be easier to just ask them to pay extra each week maybe? although i know it's difficult to govern how long they use it then.

What an excellent idea! You can get coin operated electricity meters, so could you put it on one of those?

I wouldn't pay weekly for something I'd use maybe twice a year.

Kylix make hot water washroom equipment, and fit coin operating systems to lots of their products - haven't looked into it but they might do coin operated showers. Maybe it's worth giving them a call and asking, I've heard their customer service is good :)

If you have an electricity and a water supply to the new block (with I'm sure you would) surely an ordinary coin operated (camp site) type shower would do, with a longer hose if they're possible. I go to a campsite that also does horse B&B (in a separate field!) every year and their (human) shower takes either a 20p coin for 4 minutes or £1 for 30 minutes so you can definitely get two different rates for different lengths of time.
...Thinking about it, it's just an ordinary shower and the coin box is separate so the coin box is all you'd need to look into I think. It must control the electricity to the shower rather than the shower itself IYSWIM.

Waterboy provide the coin/token meter with their system.
They are definitely available and a very good idea especially if someone decided to wash their car for instance!

Presumably as its all a new build thing, you could just put it something far cheaper than an actual horse shower, as soon as the word horse is added to anything the price quadruples. All you would then need would be a coin meter.

Exactly! This is a concern. A friend who isn't horsey at all but knows how we get ripped off after listening to my moans on this very subject, has suggested I just speak to a plumber and or an electrician and just have an ordinary electric shower but attach a coin meter to this. I will look into it. Thanks for replies so far.

I hate coin operated anything because it is so inconvenient for me, I never carry change. However I think it is a great idea and you sound a very considerate YO!!!!!! Speak to the liveries and see if they would like the hot shower and how they may like it to work- cant please everyone but can get a general feel for it :) Good luck!

Thank you, I try to be!! Most of my liveries are pleased as punch at the thought of having a hot wash and as it will probs cost me at least a couple of hundred to buy and have it installed, they are quite happy to pay for the use of it. I am also looking forward to being able to wash my 2 permenantly filthy coloured horses with warm water. Cold water never seems to get their white white!!

I worked at a yard years ago and they had an actual human shower like you'd install in your bathroom. Where the shower head would screw in instead was a hose clipped in if that makes sense? Pressure wasn't great, but I'm sure it wouldn't be too difficult to make it more powerful?

We have one that does 20 mins for 50p, or works on a card system. The YO "charges" the card as it were- so I give her a £5 and she puts 10 x 20 min washes on it, and it lives in my stable box.

Same card works the solarium too.
You can "double load" it, either put 2x 50p in, or press the button twice to load the machine with 2x 20 mins from your card:

Ill look when I go tonight what the meter thing is called :)

Yes there is a big livery yard near us that has this with a coin meter attached. I don't livery there, but have used it to wash my horses after jumping clinics there.

Yes this seems to be what a few yards have I just worry it won't be powerful enough? Do you know if the type of bathroom shower makes a difference or not? Thanks!

I would. I have a power shower in the house which would be ideal for washing a horse, if the hose was longer or the horse fitted in the bath . You might want to enclose the unit so its not too noisy but otherwise it would be ideal.

I think the one I used was a regular electric shower, not even a power one. It was plenty strong enough. Most horses wouldn't enjoy a really strong flow anyway, you don't want to power wash them!

I'm guessing you haven't got a coloured horse!! One of mine is so laid back I could probably put him through one of those long car washes!! Mmmm maybe that's the answer to his cleanliness problems! Seriously though, it would need to be reasonably powerful otherwise it would take eons to rinse soap out wouldn't it? Not like a karcher or anything though!

I did have, and a two greys on deep, wet clay soil with iron in it (so it goes red..)! But I've been brought up on well water, so you absolutely don't waste water! As a kid, in really hot weather when the well was getting a bit low, I had to take the horses down to the river in the stream and wash them there for shows! In those days I had a grey and a palomino. Personally I don't need tons of water to rinse either - sweat scraper off the excess soap before rinsing seems to do the trick.

A regular electric shower does have a reasonable stream of water doesn't it? Its not as though it trickles out..

ps, I have a bright bay and a chestnut nowadays, so don't show the iron half as much!!

I have to admit in all my time there and the amount of times I used it I didn't once notice the brand of shower lol sorry!
