hm, am not a vet but would not assume so, provided that the horse in question gets lots of careful back management by their riders/owners and that muscles are built up correctly to hold rider's weight?! Suppose that a lot of backing down is not good but it can be reduced I would think by careful tacking up and warming up before mounting? Have horse with back issues myself and I am extremely careful the way I saddle or mount her, plus do a lot of work to help her muscles.
Hi, I do Lots of long-lining, generally working long and low also under the saddle. I try to warm her up before tacking up too (walking her around or horse walker); she has changed shape dramatically since she was diagnosed with back pain and treated by physio regularly plus this type of work. I avoid jumping her though to avoid jarring.
Mine has had KS op several years ago and was never cold backed before or since. I completely agree with UKa, long lining is fab for them, probably did more than anything else to rehab him, we concentrated on being very correct in each pace before moving on to the next, wanting a decent over-track and coming through from behind to stretch out & build the back muscles- we spent a long time in walk!
I have also introduced loose pessoa this wk and am staggered as when I tried it a couple of years ago before op he went round the school doing handstands but because his back is now so strong thanks to initial work lining him so long ago post op, he hasn't really batted an eyelid and it has been really helping to encourage him to come through from behind better with an increased stride on the back legs, thus stretching out his back again. (I hasten to add he has been in ridden work 5 times a week for last 2 yrs and is doing well but I am not able to ride at moment as 8.5mth pregnant so want to make sure he retains some fitness and muscle strength especially in his back by doing groundwork with him 4 or 5 times a week).
KS can be used as a really good excuse for an issue with a horse, sometimes it is just something simple like the saddle is uncomfortable, but try getting your ned to arch his back & that will give you an idea if there is an issue there.
