Cold backed?

Or just an injury?

Went to ride pony yday with Taylor, while I was grooming him I brushed his back, he threw his head up and arched his back, like a spasm when we hurt our back?

Anyway put the saddle on he was okay, walked him out fine. Daughter got on, he about took off! She's only 2 stone so not heavy lol. It scared the hell out of me, he was pushing into me ect. I thought at the time maybe he's excited to work. We did a few laps, and he seemed a lot quicker on his feet! Normally I'm pulling him to trott, but this time he was about trotting before asked!

Going back to stable, he started turning on me, pushing me with his bum!?

What could this be? X
 
If this is sudden and unusal behaviour is sounds like and injury/ pain somewhere, Espacially due to the reaction to being brushed.

Also i dont believe horses are just cold backed, there is usually a reason.

Pain, badly fitting saddle, ulcers, anything really.

Get horse checked out my vet, chiropractor, phsyio and check saddle etc.
Obviously start with the obvious, looking for a mark, lump etc.
 
Agree - some horses are a bit girthy/sensitive, because it is their nature - I have owned one very extreme case, but no health/saddle issues. But this kind of thing does not just start, they are like that.

My other really girthy/sensitive fellow -is finally growing out of it, thank goodness.
 
I do think it's an injury :(
Although he was using a different saddle yesterday,so could that be it? He really scared my daughter and me, if he Carrys on I think il have to find somewhere else which I don't want to do :(

He is very pushy with me, but no one else! Argh :rolleyes:
 
I also don't think that 'cold backed' exists.. I own a horse that was 'cold backed' - when he arrived in his tiny pony saddle (a 16'1 tb) I understood why. He was also so girthey that he would panic & lay down when girthed, that was ulcer related.

In your case though I think it sound like an injury.. My horse suddenly started panicking & taking off in blind panic in the ménage & he'd injured a bottom/back muscle.. Could be something as simple as that..

And yes if u usually use a normal saddle & he's fine could definitely be saddle related if he only did this when ridden in a different saddle.
 
I disagree with an injury, if he is fine with everyone else and pushy with you he is probably taking the piss. You sound from your threads as if you are inexperienced, I would get some help before you daughter is put off
 
He could easily have had a splat in the paddock - especially as you noticed he was very covered in mud.

Definately a good check over by vet or chiro would be a good idea.

Hmm, it sounds more like he was/is in pain than him being 'cold backed' really. Can I ask what breed he is? I used to know a Taylor that did that sometimes... Feel free to PM instead if you like :)
