colic and flu&tet jabs help please

hi i have been told that gymbo if he has flu and tetnus jabs combined he will get colic straight away my vets keep saying they have never had this happen to a horse and that there is no scientific way that it would either but i think i should have them seperate dont you ???

Unless your horse is prone to colic I wouldn't worry - mine are always done combined.

there is no way it would cause colic. in the jabs there is dead or very weak pieces of the flu and tetnus virus. once this goes into the body it will cause the body to produce antibodies. this means that if the body comes into with full tetnus or flu virus's again it will have a remedy to fight the virus.

there is no way it will cause colic!!, it works on white blood cells and proteins..

i know this is what my vet keeps saying but the previous owner said that he got it twice and it was after the jabs

It does sound a bit far fetched. If it happened only twice perhaps there was another coincidental reason or reasons. Could the vaccinations have been around worming time, mine gets colic after worming, which is more probable as the medication goes through the gut. Or before going onto spring/autumn grass?

I have been recommended NAF Synbiozyme for times when my horse needs extra digestive support. Why not try your horse on that for a week, have the combined jab and continue for another week?

Rest assured that the actual combinatinon of jabs won't be the cause of the colicking... (as people have already explained) However if your mare gets stressed by the whole "being injected" scenario then this could bring on a rise in gastric acid, which can bring about a colic episode - you could think about giving her something to counteract this - if this is the case, having separate call outs for two jabs would be worse than having them both together and getting it over and done with!
