Colic and then Laminitis

I wondered if anyone's horse had had an attack of colic (not spasmodic - gassy something, the U shaped part of the intestine near the bottom) and then developed laminitis afterwards?

My horse had this, then just as he was due to come home from the hospital he developed it in his front feet. He was in his stable the whole time, and when he was at home there was hardly any grass in the paddock anyway.

He is sound and on box rest and being cold hosed twice a day.

Just wondered what the recovery period was and people's experiences.

Thanks

I believe that there's a link between the two - the digestive system goes wrong, releasing toxins into the bloodstream which trigger laminitis...

When I worked at my vets we had a horse there that got this. Was a fit showjumper and had been competing at a show, got dehydrated through the day and got colic in the evening. He was fine and then through the stress of it got laminitus...it is quite common that after something stressful that laminitus occurs.
He got through it with plenty of box rest and slowly bringing him back into work.
Lots of cuddles and care...
Hope yours gets better soon :0)

Thanks for that. I did read that there is sometimes a connection between intestine problems and then laminitis.

My horse was originally prescribed 1 month's box rest. He's already done 2 weeks but his digital pulses are still raised indicating that the lami is still there doing it's evil work

twinkletoes - how long was the horse you mentioned on box rest for and how long did it take before he was able to be ridden?

Well dermot had surgory and an opiration on his small intestine which wasn't working, he had made a very good recovery from this and his guts were almost fully working again but toxins where relased into his blood during this surgory which some how got to the lamize in the hoof and caused very acute lamintis with no warning litarly suddenly at 5am the friday after tuesday opiration. He had it in all 4 feet so bad he litarly couldn't and wouldn't move. His post morton shows that the laministis was terminal and that there truely was no hope. (He of wasn't on feed but a drip and was very underweight)

I was sorry to read about Dermot FMN

That was very sad.

King's colic struck him after I'd only had him a week so the insurance isn't covering it. When he was taken to Newmarket they warned me they may need to operate if his intestine twisted and it was a life or death situation through the night, but thankfully he didn't need the operation and has recovered from the colic. Then this damn lami started suddenly in his fronts.

Though he is happy in himself and sound without bute. He hasn't lost any weight either thankfully.

I guess it's just a waiting game, but wondered if anyone had had a similar experience.

Hey,
well the horse was on box rest for about 2 months and then literally they had to take it slow riding him again...
just gentle care and not over doing anything will work.

One of the forum members has recently lost her horse precisely because of these two issues.

Though Dermot had acute lami in all 4 feet didn't he? King has chronic in 2 feet.

Good news is I couldn't feel a pulse this morning, and it's usually pretty easy to find so that's a good sign. Though not getting too excited yet in case it reappears when I go down there again this afternoon.

The vets still haven't phoned me back. It will have been a week tomorrow, so I'm not best pleased.

Hopefully once he's completed his month's box rest I'll be able to start walking him out in hand.

What are they supposed to be phoning you back for?

The vet came out to give him his tetanus and also to check his feet over. She was going to confer with the vet at Newmarket about the box rest and his treatment after box rest. She visited Thursday morning and said she'd ring me back that day after she'd spoken to the vet. It's now been almost a week and not heard from her, despite leaving several messages at reception.
