Mine had a horid bout last week and to cut long story short ended up in Newmarket on a drip and with liquid paraffin pumped into him every four hours.

He had a good night thurs and once they started feeding him was back to normal and passing droppings. He came home friday and seemed himself, poo'd on box etc, ate dinner Fri evening ok, but sat morning had only passed three droppings over the 14 hours he was in, didnt eat breakfast and hadnt cleared his hay.

This morning he passed two droppings overnight, but ate dinner last night and breakfast (although it took a fair while considering he is one of those that gobbles it down)

Turned him out for abit this morning and brought in at lunch, ate some hay this afternoon and his tea too, passed 2 droppings in the 5/6 hours he was in but they contained alot of parafin...should they?

How long should I expect until he is eating, drinking and passing droppings as normal!?

Speak to your vet asap.

If he isn't eating properly when he's normally a greedy horse then I'd be worried, plus that's really not a lot of droppings. I'd be worried that another impaction is building up (though if less is going in obviously less will be coming out).

I really wouldn't want to delay with this though. Give your vet a call now, hopefully they'll put your mind at rest but if they do decide he needs seeing again then sooner is better than later.

Hi

Sorry you are still worried about your lad, probably best to give Rossdales or your vet a quick ring just to put your mind at ease.

A few questions that you will probably be asked by your vets:

Has he been drinking since he has been home? Are his poops harder or softer than normal or about normal consistency? Do his guts sounds normal i.e. regular but not excessive gut sounds rather than no or diminished gut sounds?

When my lad came out of Rossdales both times after colic admissions, it did take him a couple of days to get back to 'normal'. Especially as he was starved at Rossdales, but did go back to full rations before he left, it took about 36 to 48 hours for food to work through until his normal quantity of poops started appearing.

Hope he gets back to normal soon.X

he was starved 2 days before at mine (well hadnt eaten) and then at Rossdales until thursday evening where he was given his normal meal... hmm thinks Ill give him a little more time to settle
