Obviously will be getting advice from vet but just wondered if anyone who has experienced their own horse having impaction colic could let me know how they managed their horse post 'clearance'...

Just want to prepare myself for when my boy comes home from horsepital hopefully in the next few days.

Thanks

I had a horse years ago that had an impaction as horse next door ate into his wooden stable over night and he copied! argh!- it was christmas eve too and like your horse ended up in horsepital on christmas day- he didn't need operating on, just was flushed out with gallons of liquid parrafin, he was there about a week and when he came home I was advised to keep him on 4 small sloppy feeds a day and gradually decreased it down to his normal amount of feeds, plenty of haynets and he was kept in his normal routine as much as possible and was able to be turned out. He started off just walking out for a couple of weeks until he had got his strength back (he lost a lot of weight while he was in horspital) and then I was able to increase his work- he never had the problem again.

Good luck with your horse, bet you can't wait to collect him!- go by what the vets say though as they know your horses situation!

Thanks for the feedback... My vets are working on getting my boy eating hay normally at the moment and said to worry about feed later...he's currently on a handfull of hay every few hours so we've a way to go yet.

Hopefully home wednesday...
