My horse got colic a couple of times about a month - 6 weeks ago but seems fine since.

However, before this he never used to lay down, or we hardly ever saw him anyway and now he has a little lay down most afternoons.

Do you think his tummy keeps hurting him a bit, or he's just discovered that an afternoon nap is quite fun??

Has his routine changed at all, i.e. turnout, feed, exercise?

It could be that this is normal behaviour for him, but you have only just noticed.

Do you know what was causing the colic in the first place?

yeah, do you know what caused the colic? also, how old is he? we had one that went through a grwoth spurt at five and had a little snooze a couple of times a day!

I agree with Llwyncwn, you might just be being more observent to his normal behaviour because he's been poorly.

No, his routine hasn't changed and he'll be 8 this time so I hope he's finished growing!

We never really got to the route of the colic but he had a blood test to rule out anything serious. I think he's ok, thanks guys!

I think we are going to have him PTS.

He is quite happy in his stable and is eating very well but mum led him outside and he didn't really know where he was and she said he was shuffling along like an old lady.

Well I say PTS, I think the huntsman will probably be coming later on today.

Thanks for your concern. xxx

Poor old boy - certainly sounds like the sensible decision.

I know, it's a shame they don't go on forever! He's had a fun life though and he's only been ill for a couple of weeks so he hasn't had too bad a time. Will be greatly missed though.

I always sell my horses way before they get to Cheers' age, much less upsetting that way!

There is a certain satisfaction knowing that they've had a good ending though.

If my old horse Simon was stood up during the day in the stable i started to worry!!! Although he was old there was nothing wrong with him he just loved his sleep!! He was like this for about the last 6 years!! I have lost count the number of concerned people who rang me because he didnt get up for ages and i rushed home from work to find a sleepy head!

If its unusual for your horse just keep an eye on him. I presume he is not displaying any other symptoms of colic?

Just a thought, my mare went through this last winter, had dung samples looked into, came back as in-conclusive medium burden of tapeworm, so we sorted out another dose of worming, ( pls note she is wormed regulary). then all last summer nothing happened regarding attacks, then she started again, we have now put it down to gastric ulcers, so make sure she always has some hay to eat. touchwood all seems to be going well, have used coligone on 1 attack she had, that sorted her out fine!!!
