I lost my horse to colic on Friday. The vet said it was his third case in 12 hours and since then I have heard of more cases. One person lost 2 horses in a week.

The vet didn't really know the cause of all his cases. He thought it could be the cloudy wet weather affecting the grass and therefore the gut. I was wondering if there has been a spate of colic in other parts of the country or are we unlucky in the S-W

I'm so sorry for your loss.

My horse had her first ever colic (fortunately very mild) last Tuesday. My vet also said he had seen a lot of it that day.

I'm very sorry for your loss, horrible.

My vet works at Leahurst where they have had an unbelievable amount in due to colic all of this year; many, sadly not making it. A lot of the time this is due simply to how long the horse is ill before it gets there as each small delay makes it harder for them to be saved especially when some have travelled over three hours to get there! There doesn't seem to be a common denominator either although they always seem to have worst cases in the summer, when perhaps horses aren't checked as often as they would be if stabled and on regular diets, so that again, treatment is later in starting. I don't think it's just in your part of the country but all over.

Sorry to hear your loss - colic is such a horrible thing

So sorry to hear about your poor horse. My horse died of colic in June. No reason for it. He was happy and eating hay in his stable 2 and a half hours before I arrived at the yard to ride - where I found him in agony. Sadly, despite catching it so quickly there was nothing that could be done.
