My 17yr old mare is almost half way through her gestation and when I brought her in tonight she started to colic after eating her dinner which she had about an hour after being brought in as both her and my pony get legs washed and groomed before tea.
She ate half her tea then started stretching and rolled and laid down and was flank watching, she had normal gut sounds, had passed normal droppings, but had a raised rr and a hr of 60!
My vet couldnt find anything out of the ordinary and after having some finadyne she settled down and my vet thought it was maybe the foal playing football with her guts.
Being an arab she is short coupled so I guess things will start to get a bit squashed and she looks in foal but has lost weight and is on more feed than I would normally feed her but she did move 250 miles 6 weeks ago so that might explain it, she is thin skinned but is well rugged up and not cold or too warm.
Her routine hasnt changed but last weekend the livery yards neighbours 3 year old colt escaped and got into the field with my mare, gelding and two other mares and apart from chasing them around he didnt seem to have caused any damage. The colt was more likely to get attacked by her as she is very protective of my pony gelding and wont let anything near him.
My vet says she will scan her when she is settled and back to normal and check the foal is ok and will leave me some bute to give her incase it happens again.
I havent heard of mares colicking by the foal this early on and when I was a vet nurse we only had post foaling colics come in for torsions or ruptured arteries.
Any advice will be much appreciated. Thanks.
