Evening

I bought a tub of Coligon powder for my mare, she is finding the minty smell too strong, I thought it was fab but it makes her sneeze

Does anyone have any tips for getting her to eat it???
Please :)

I had a similar experience hun, with my rescue shetland mare. She's only 9hh so was only having teeny tiny feeds even though she was very poor and underweight when she first came to me. Well, I dumped a humugus scoop of Coligone minty powder in her tea and she pushed it around with her nose a bit then refused to eat it. What worked for me was to go back to the beginning and introduce it very slowly. So just quarter of an eggspoonful the first day, building up to half by the end of the week, and so on. That should do the trick with your ned (dampen her feed with eg wet speedibeet or just the water from it to stop sneezing) but if she's still unhappy about it you could add a cupful of Tesco's cheap apple juice to the feed at the same time as reducing the amount of Coligone. She'll think it's Christmas Day! Then slowly increase the amount of Coligone and decrease the amount of apple juice. It's worth persevering as Coligone is miraculous stuff!!!

Mine wouldn't eat it any way I tried, so gave up - sorry not much help am I! The only other option is too try the liquid coligone which I understand to be flavoured with aniseed?

Hi there - I will PM you -
If you start with a little amount and build it up slowly you may get your horse to eat it - some can be put off by the smell... funnily enough if they dislike the Powder they tend to love the liquid and vice-versa! I am more than happy to send you a small liquid to try to see if that is more appealing for your horse?

Thanks for this, Saf only gets staypower and alfa a and because she is fussy they are fed in two sittings, tried it in the mix but she left it so now I am feeding the mix and once all gone give her the alfa a with about 1/2 dose of the coligon at the moment, think the bitter taste of the alfa seems to lessen the strong mint, she wont go to it straight away but is eating it overnight, might try bit of apple juice too:)
Thank you:)

Thank you, have replied to you PM too, have perservered by mixing in with the alfa a and up to 1/2 dose so getting there.
By the way it tastes fab, Saf does not have anything that I have not tasted first, even the regumate much to my vets disgust lol
Thanks again:)

Aaaaargh Saf.........!!!!

PLEASE anyone else who is contemplating tasting Regumate.....DO NOT!!!! Its a very powerful hormone and can cause major problems for women of childbearing age. In all seriousness please treat it with utmost respect.

I know, it was only a dipped finger to see if she would eat it:( and I am no longer child bearing age, no harm done, like I said the vet was not happy but nothing passes my horses lips that I have not tasted, thats just me sorry and please no one do the same!

I totally agree with this. My lad wouldn't touch the powder no matter how much food I hid it in but he loves the liquid, licks the bucket clean! It's also brilliant stuff if you need to hide medicines in their feed :)
