Muppet had an MRI today and it was found that she had significant damage to the collateral ligament around the coffin joint. IRAP treatment has been suggested. Her other foot is going to have an MRI tomorrow as she has been intermittantly lame on that one as well.

I am going to research further, but need to get back to the vet tomorrow to say whether to have the IRAP or not.

Has anyone any experience of similar injuries? Ideas of treatment success, experience of IRAP etc. It is all a bit of a rush as this has been going on for a year now and my insurance runs out in days!

Any help gratefully received!

Hey, sorry to hear your pony is broked

My mare ruptured the medial collateral ligament of her left fore coffin joint in nov 2007. she was only given a 30% chance of becomming field sound again, but as she was insured we decided to throw everything at her.
She had shockwave and IRAP treatment. She was box rested for 3 months and then turned out into a small paddock that was increased over time.
I wasd allowe back onboard in the April of 2008 and we gradually built up the walk work. She stayed sound and as i am at uni 200 miles away and unable to ride her outside of uni holidays, we just took it v v slowly. She has stayed sound on that foot and this summer (after lots of fittening work) we went to the beach and had our first gallop in 2 years

She is lovely and sound now, but i think that the key with this injury is time and rest. Do you know if the injury is acute or chronic?
feel free to message me with any questions - i'll see if i can be any help

My mare was diagnosed with severe colateral ligament damage in both front feet in april. After a lot of research, tears, and discussions with the vets my understanding is this. Co lateral ligament damage is one of the hardest injuries to treat and therefore vets are very guarded on their positive out look on it. without very clever and modern treatment such as irap the prognosis on these types of injuries are not great. my mare had irap and shock wave therapy as without it i was told the likely hood of her coming sound was minimal.
Given your situation with your insurance and the injury your horse has I would absolutely throw everything you can get at her in the last days of insurance. IRAP therapy has been shown to give you one of the best chances of recovery and the risks involved with it are minimal. Feel free to pm me if you would like my expereinces with my mare but don't want to bore everyone with my long winded story.
So I would definately go with the IRAP and I'll keep eveything crossed for you and your horse and making a good recovery.

My horse had severe collateral ligament damage so much so was told to put him down he had irap and six months box rest he is also barefoot he now in work and is amazing i still wont jump him to much of a risk

I'm so sorry for you, I was hoping it wasn't anything serious.
My advice is throw everything you can at it whilst still covered by insurance. The success of IRAP on collateral ligament damage is still not known as it's only been recently been used. When Jesper was diagnosed it wasn't an option but if it had been I would have gone for it. Instead we tried shock wave and a years rest. He did come sound for nine months following this but has since retired as he was forever intermittently lame.
Sadly collateral ligament damage doesn't have a great outcome but treatments are evolving rapidly. We lost Sammy to a ruptured collateral ligament 6yrs ago and he was only the 8th ever to be diagnosed as MRI was so new. We didn't lose Jesper and he's paddock sound so that's an improvement on Sammy, so I hope in the not to distant future hopefully they'll find better treatments. *hugs*
