It looks like we may have to have our old boy put down this year, and would like to see if we can keep some semen.
We did have him tested for fertility and he was ok, but has anyone ever done this and know the costs? How long does it keep once frozen for instance?
I'm going to talk to our local big stud who do AI but any info first might make me look not such an idiot!

I think freezing horse semen is very difficult, therefore I would imagine it would cost a fair amount.

You should contact Tessa at West Kington Stud - she's really lovely and so very helpful. www.westkingtonstud.co.uk They are in Wiltshire anda re DEFRA approved for stallion collection.

They are a tad bit closer to you than Twemlows in Shropshire

Sorry to hear that Bert might be on his way out. As for longevity of the semen once frozen, I know that Jennie still has some of Dutch Gold's semen and he died...... in the spring of either 03/04.

I have frozen semen for both my stallions. Aragorns was collected a long time ago so I would nee to check it now to see it was OK. Decanter's was collected last year. Both were done at Twemlows by Tullis. Cost is dependent on what country you want to freeze for, how much you want to collect and how many doses you get per collection. More dose per collection reduces the time he needs to be there.
Tullis has a handy price list on excel which I'll e-mail you.

Unfortunately some stallions semen is not suitable for freezing even if it is alright chillled.

Good luck!
