Hi everyone,
Just trying to do some college work, ive got a question that says 'list the main types of concentrate feed' So, this, to me would mean simple compound feeds such as nuts and mixes. Though, a friend of mine has had hers marked and they've mentioned feeds such as oats, barley, peas and such. Which to me come under Straights.
So, what, in HHO's educated opinion comes under a concentrate feed?
Thanks :D

to me and this is how i answered it for my Level Two

Compund feeds are things like nuts etc which are genrally a well balanced complete feed to give the horse with a specific purpose and balanced for a specific job e.g a stud nut is complete feed speicifically forumulated for a job, and that is compound not a concentrate

concentrates from what i always understood are like straights, so Brans, Maize, Barley oats, beets linseed etc the more old fashioned way of feed where you would formulate your own diets from a few basic ingredients

did you not get a Lantra work book? you shold of been given one on the whole its not so handy but it points you towards what they are looking for at the various units and what they consider to be the way of doing things, if you dont have one the boss woman used to have some in her office

I did get one yes, but i left it in my room before i went home :) I'll have to have a look through it when i go back.
This is for my level 3 though, however it'll be the same. Just always saw concentrates as nuts and mixes and straights as....straights!

Ah i see, the penny has just dropped! Concentrate would be the umbrella term for anything thats not forage, so bucket feeds... be it compounds (nuts/mixes) or straights?

Pretty much! In the old days though, things were simple - forage was grass and hay, and concentrates were oats, barley, nuts and mixes etc. However, now we have many fibre-based bucket feeds - things such as alfalfa chaffs, beets and then compound feeds based on fibres which are a bit of a grey area as to whether they are concentrates or forage!

if tis level three although K amy not accept it becasue it means she has to use her brain and work harder it is acceptable to use your assingments from college and corss refernce the points for K&U into the assignement, so highlight the relevant passage in your assignment and then write next to it the K&U that is relates to

for level three really you shouldnt just be answering questions my acessor wouldnt allow that as at elvel three your meants to show more practical and real life experiences as its a level meant for people taking on more responisbility and aiming more towards management than level two and this should be reflected in your work

it also means you can rattle throguh it supre fast and thats why mine took me about 6 months to complete
