Oh, wonderous AAD peeps! :D
My friend has had her collie X for a while now - he's a rescue but his breeding has always been a point of discussion, and I just thought I'd see what you guys think... Here he is:

What's in the mix?! He's about 40cms tall and very fluffy when not clipped. Not the best pic but his tail curls round over his back - almost like a pomeranian(!)
Any ideas?! Just for fun really as we've run out of ideas!

He just looks like a collie to me, poss a colli x sheltie, he has a sheltie like face from that view, but he basically looks like a border collie, he looks to have a little sheltie peachness in his ears too.

Think you might have hit the nail on the head there Cayla - thank you!!
He is a tad peachy...although you can't really see it, his eyebrows are especially peachy! :D
He's officially known as "a lovely boy" when people ask what he is, he's most laid-back dog I've ever met too :) Not bad for a young rescue collie :D

It's really just a guessing game, many mixed breed dogs have a misleading appearance, sometimes it can make people feel convinced about that certain breeds simply must have been involved, but the reality is sometimes quite different.

However, judging by his appearance alone, as in his size, colour, that you say he has a quite fluffy coat when not clipped and that his tail often curls up over his back, I would guess on a white, whitish, Spitz of small to medium size.

Perhaps a Japanese Spitz? (Only allowed colour is white.)

Or a German Spitz, Mittelspitz? (White, Black/tan and White + Solid colour are examples of the colours that is allowed.)

Dogs of some Spitz-breeds with a curled tail over their back, can have it hanging when they're sleeping and/or are standing relaxed, but it comes up over the back when they begin to walk.

However, though that I think that judging by his appearance, he could perhaps be a Border Collie x Mittelspitz cross, if your friend is really curious, perhaps he/she can do a DNA-test on the dog? Katielou_houston have done a DNA-test on her dog Abe We got Abe's DNA results.

He looks like a border collie x rough collie to me.

I suppose that he doesn't need to have Spitz genes to have a shortish and/or straight croup, which could also lead to him carrying his tail like that, but though I've seen Rough Collies and Shetland Sheepdogs carrying their tails high, I've not seen anyone carry their tail in a way that have reminded me of a Pomeranian.

I think I'm going to have to tell her to get a DNA test...I want to know!! :D

(Buster deserves to know too :D)
He definitely carries his tail like a Spitz..when he gets excited the tail almost lifts his back-end off the ground! Could be a mix of all three I suppose... :D

Don't waste your money on the DNA tests - they are far from reliable and not the same as the parentage testing of GSDs.

I have seen working collies with gay tails and it is a not uncommon fault in Rough collies.

I would say you have a collie.

i agree.

it's a collie

they come is all sorts of wonderful colours, with varying colouring to eyebrows and ears, and some have the most ridiculous tail carriage.

But he isn't fat. You can see where the fluff stops and the dog starts, and he looks just fine:confused:

I have no flippin' idea but he looks lovely - would your mate consider swapping him for one slightly used spaniel?;):D

I think we're all agreed he's a fluffy collie-type :p :p
Owner adores him and doesn't care what he is...so as intriguing as a DNA test sounds, I think he'll stay as plain old Buster :D

Spudlet - I've tried to steal him, and she's having none of it! I'm dead subtle too ;) "Oh look, I've accidentally clipped my lead onto Buster - you fancy keeping the spangle?" *whistles innocently*

Get caught everytime :(

Fat?

Unless I have I missed a photo somewhere and it is the photo above the unknown user is referring to, they have revealed either his/hers own ignorance about dogs, since a dog's body does not always ends where their fur ends, or that they're out to cause trouble.
Neither of those reasons seems to be quite flattering, according to me.

I found this gorgeous photo on Flickr of a fluffy dog doing agility.

I doubt that he or she is fat.

Certainly not fat!!!

Anyway here's some info, regardless of what actual breeds are in the dog, it would be known as a working sheepdog:

The Border Collie was not recognised by The Kennel Club until 1976 and not given Championship status until 1982; shortly afterwards a working test was introduced to qualify dogs as full Champions rather than Show Champions. Un-registered or non-pedigree dogs of Border Collie type are known as Working Sheepdogs and it is these dogs who are seen performing so brilliantly in the Obedience and Agility rings. The Working Sheepdog tends to be a slightly racier version, teeming with energy, but both need homes where they are given the opportunity to use both their brains and energy constructively.
