colour advise

I've taken on a rescue pony who is what I would probably call a dapple/iron grey? Now his passport is not an official breed passport so know there's a chance that what parents are written isn't necessarily accurate. But the sire it states is chestnut and the dam bay roan. Now from my limited colour genetics knowledge, surely this would mean a grey offspring is impossible? One of the grandparents was grey. He's down as a blue roan. Is this likely and if so how does this colour differ from a grey? Will he grey out the same as a grey?

One parent at least has to be grey for your chap to be. Either the dam was grey and not roan, or he is a blue roan in which case he will not grey out. However, without a picture it is difficult to say for sure.

The colour is often wrong on passports (aren't passports great ). The roan was probably an incorrectly identified grey and your pony is grey (born chestnut).

I'm no genetic expert but I would suspect he has greyed out, rather than being born grey, & passport was drawn up after greying out.

Definately grey. His dam was probably young and still showing base colour.

Ignore what I said earlier RE born chestnut - I rush read and now I see that the chestnut referred to his sire.

thanks peeps, this is what i thought, that he is grey, though his mane is fully black!! Whatever he is he's lovely and fitted in wonderfully! Just interested really! Agree that if he is grey and the breeding is accurate, then his dam must have greyed out as I know the sire is old now and still chestnut!! lol!

Exact colour of my little sec A gelding. who is now pure white lol
