My Shagya stallion is grey and registered grey with the French National Stud and SHGB. His dam also grey is registered Bay Roan with the Hungarian National Stud, as would he if born in Hungary or Romania. His foals from CB. Freisan and TB have been bay, From a chestnut Shagya 'chestnut' from a grey Lusitano a grey colt. I have a question from an owner of a Palomino mare asking what colour her foal would be. Can anyone help?

If he got a bay from a presumably black friesian you know he has at least one A, if he has also produced a chesnut you also know he has at least one e, do you know whether he was bay or chestnut at birth? or what his sire was?

So from that you know he is e?A?Gg

Palo mare = ee??CRcr

Which gives you a lot of options depending on what the question marks are.

Foal will have a 50% chance of being grey whatever the base colour. It also Has a 50% chance of being a dilute.
Most likely bay, chestnut, palomino or buckskin as the base colour.
There are some good coat colour calculators if you google

They'll say what I said with the information given 🤣,

could be red, could be black, could be bay, could have cream on top of any of those or could be grey on top of any of the previous.

Thank you Ester, his sire was Bay and he was black at birth (I bred him). I am still not sure what to say to the Palomino owner? His dam came from the Hungarian National Stud at Babolna, the foundation stud for the breed. Shagya were bred to be Cavalry horses for the Hapsburgs and for the Imperial Cavalry always grey. Babolna do breed bay and chestnut also, black is very rare.

I thought you probably would have bred him :). So we know he isn't chestnut underneath which means he must be a chestnut carrier (Ee) in order to have produced a chestnut foal.
Was he very black at birth? In order for him to have bay foal with the Friesian he must carry one dominant agouti gene which would mean he has to be bay underneath but he might have been very dark as I'm sure you know grey foals are often hyperpigmented at birth. It seems like he hasn't produced a black so we don't know whether he is Aa or AA.

from that you know he is either EeAaGg or EeAAGg

Palo mare = ee??CRcr - we don't know what her agouti status is

if you colour calculator not knowing the mares agouti so leaving that amiguous you get:
12.50% - Gray (Palomino)
12.50% - Gray (Red (Chestnut/Sorrel))
12.50% - Palomino
12.50% - Red (Chestnut/Sorrel)
9.38% - Bay
9.38% - Buckskin
9.38% - Gray (Bay)
9.38% - Gray (Buckskin)
3.13% - Black
3.13% - Gray (Black)
3.13% - Gray (Smoky Black)
3.13% - Smoky Black

If he is EeAAGg
12.50% - Bay
12.50% - Buckskin
12.50% - Gray (Bay)
12.50% - Gray (Buckskin)
12.50% - Gray (Palomino)
12.50% - Gray (Red (Chestnut/Sorrel))
12.50% - Palomino
12.50% - Red (Chestnut/Sorrel)
