I know absolutely nothing about genetics, can anyone help?
Dam is a dark bay, her sire is also dark bay and her dam is bay
Sire is chestnut, his sire is grey and his dam is chestnut
Can these two produce a bright bay foal??

Yup, there isn't a genetic difference between bright or dark bay.
So you have dam ee (no dominant extension) with unknown agouti and sire E_A_. The possibilities are chestnut, bay or black.

Yes, bay is bay.

There are some theories on why you get the darker or lighter shades - e.g AA may be lighter than Aa and EE darker than Ee but not a proven thing.

Is this a foal already here or are you wondering what it can be

A friend is hoping to put her mare in foal and was talking to me about genetics and it all went a bit over my head! I was simply curious how it all worked.

Also how do markings work, is the shape hereditary or is it random?
e.g. if dam had no markings and sire had a stripe could the foal have a different marking like a star?

A bit hereditary and a bit may be related to position in the womb. There are some white spotting genes that can make white bits more likely w20, sabino, splash and they each look a bit different. White bits I think can also be inhibited by other genes but I'm less sure about that.
http://horse.jenniferhoffman.net/horse-color-genetics.html this is a bit out of date and not entirely accurate but it can help you get the gist if you're interested.

Yes, you have various genes that cause white markings on the face but in some horses it will be minimal e.g. a small star and snip but on another horse it will be expressed more and be a blaze.

There's a really good Facebook group about colour genetic
