I have a very odd coloured horse at the moment and have had for a while now!! Here is a picture of him taken at the weekend. His mane is nearly all black, his tail is mostly white and he is brown with white spots!
I posted a picture of him last year and said I would let you all know if he went grey or not.

Do you think he will end up rose grey? Or just grey?! He is passprted as roan, which I suppose is correct at the moment, but rather vague.

This weekend (3yo);

Thanks for your nice comments! I bought him as a scruffy 20month old at the beginning of last spring and I think he is brilliant!

I didn't think he was bay roan - I know his legs are slightly darker than his body but they aren't black?

I have two Shagya Arabs who are passported by Hungarian Stud Book as Bay Roan. They are both grey now with dapples. They are in French Stud Book as grey as France does not recognise roan or so I was told.

However, my Highland Pony who is Cream Dun In Germany and Scotland is now a Roan in France???

anakin do you know his breeding, that may give you a clue? I suspect you will end up with a rose grey....so far!

Yes, he is by Welcome Flagmount out of a Huntingfield Rebel mare. I believe both his parents were grey but he has bay and chestnut in his lines too. I don't have any pictures of his dam.

Here is his dad;

I don't know whether you were at this years stallion gradings but there was a horse passed with VERY similar colour and markings to yours, Munfin Midnight Rebel RID and he is by Huntingfield Rebel

!!!! So it quite possibly comes from his side of the family, not into colour genetics so can't tell you any more than that sorry

Wow, thanks, that's very interesting! When I bought him I didn't care what colour he was, but he attracts a lot of attention. People are always asking me if he's an apaloosa!!

It'd be nice to know what colour he'll end up.

Huntingfield rebel has a few dapples but is generally quite a white grey I have some pics of him from when he was younger and more recent ones and his colour hasn't changed a great deal. I would say he will end up a similar colour to his sire, but as I say I'm not into colour genetics!!

He's grey! And VERY nice! But he certainly seems to have a few Tetrarch spots there - I imported a 2 yo RID gelding by Grange Bouncer a few years ago and he was a very 'rosey' gray with Tetrarch spots (and we found The Tetrarch about 8 generations back in his pedigree.)

This is him aged 6 - no longer mine but I keep in touch.

My mare was very similar colouring without the spots when I bought her at 3 (she is TBxID from King of Diamonds). She is now fleabitten grey at 14 but still has a black mane. She took quite a while to grey out - not til she was 6 or 7.

Thanks for your help everyone. I think the consensus is that he is going to go grey, but just a bit slower than normal!
I can enjoy a few years of not scrubbing him clean then.

Thanks for the piccy Janet - glad you like him! I can see him going the same colour as the chap you imported.
