My boy is a 7 year old 3/4TB 1/4 Shire. He's dark bay and I've had him just over a year, when I got him he had a small white patch on the side of his belly which has started to now fade, it isn't from a scar. About 4 months ago another white patch developed on his hind leg and has become stronger (more white hair) over the months. So what is this, will he continue to get random white patches over his life? What gene causes this? He does also have a few white hairs in his coat, they are barely noticeable though. I'm guessing the gene comes from the shire in his breeding as I didn't think TB's could have anything but block colours? Willing to be proven wrong though!

Looks like Sabino to me, which both Shires and TB's have. The white sock at the bottom of the second photo gives a clue as it is jagged edged which is typical of sabino.

My chestnut arab gelding has a 'roany' spot similar to your boy's on his elbow an my anglo has two 'roany' spots (side of her stomach and the inside of one hind leg). Both horses also have white flecks in their coats and jagged edged white markings. The spots are hard to see (or disappear in my gelding's case) when the winter coat comes and then show up again with the summer coat.

You can see the spots on her side and inside hind leg (just under the line of her tummy).

The colourful TB - http://www.whitehorseproductions.com/tbcolor1.html have fun! :)

Thank you faracat! That explains it! The website is brilliant-very informative! Is it common for these patches to come and go, ie is he likely to develop more? I quite like them, it makes him that little bit more special.

With the changes between summer/winter coats, yes, but they don't move, just seem to be harder to see in the winter coat. A couple of people on here with youngsters have noticed sabino patches developing.
