Coloured Breeding

Hi,

I have a TBx (VERY TB like) Skewbald mare. Stands 15.2hh and would like to one day put her in foal. She is 8this year. I would like to get a taller horse from her, yet keep the TB looks (at least sport horse - not cob) and coloured markings.

We do not have the money to go and splash out on an expensive covering, although if I could I would. But obviously would like the best match possible.

Does anyone know how or had experience with getting free or cheap coverings by good stallions?

Phew that may be a bit of a tall order I am afraid

......to get the best stallions you have to pay for them, unless you have a very very nice mare that they are willing to cover, due to bloodlines or competition results etc.

I am not sure if there is a homozygous TB stallion about, or a very blood type (as in light boned) warmblood equivalent......especially one that is free or has a low stud fee.

But I could stand corrected by someone else on the forum...

Ask around locally. Someone might have a young colt that you could use. Something perhaps at the start of his career?

I don't know where you are but Bazaars Texas could be the one!
He's CHAPS Graded, 7/8ths TB, 16.2hh and stands near Stafford. His stud fee now is £350 I think. Let me know if you want the number. He's not homozygous but I've had four coloureds by him from three different TB bay mares! He is also now in the list of sires of 7 year old eventers and all of mine have been very well balanced and athletic.
This was him at his Grading, a few years ago now!

What has your mare done? Has she any competition/show/progeny history?

I have a young homozygous German warmblood Sport horse stallion - who will be covering a couple of my International Grade A and St.Pr.St mares .

He will be going forward for grading and professionaly trained/competed, so he will have to prove himself as a Performance Stallion - and not just a producer of colour!

(NOT that I am saying there is anything wrong with that - but its just not for me! So please - dont be offended)

We would consider a covering to a proven mare with good competition history for a very nominal fee

I agree with Fleur100.
I have a tbxid coloured colt by just zulu that has only covered a few mares last season,so we are un- sure of what he is going to produce,so our stud fee is low,but he has to start some where.Hopefully he will throw some thing very nice and then we can start putting up our fees.

Hmm I am glad you said that, I like a good horse because it is good, I just dont see that many good coloured horses to warrant the fashion (don't be offended Pat!) (and my dad and grandad will spinning in their grave, to hear me say that!)
