I want to a bit of showing with Sol this year once she has put all the weight back on she lost , but my question is what % is their markings and what % is their conformation ?

and is there anything you can do to make hocks look less straight as hers are rather rubbish

Nothing you can do re hocks am afraid!! Shouldnt mark re. markings. If there are 2 horses with exceptional movemnt and conformation, then the better marked may win, but thats the only time the markings should be taken into account.

Markings are the last thing to come into it. The class should be judged as an ordinary show class with markings only coming into it if there are 2 equaly nice horses. however markings can affect how conformation looks.

So it doesn't really matter in coloureds classes if they only have one bit of colour on them ? I'm starting to hate showing

This is taken from the BSPA Rule Book

IN HAND

Best Colour and Markings 90% colour and markings, including
Overo & Overo marked 10% judge’s discretion

Best Skewbald and Piebald 80% conformation and type characteristics, including Overo/Overo Marked 20% colour and markings.

Type and Breeding Classes 90% conformation and type characteristics 10% colour and markings.

RIDDEN CLASSES

Ridden Skewbald and Piebald. 40% conformation and type characteristics 60% Ride, performance, manners and display

Working Hunters. 70/30% as 50% Jumping 10% Style and manners whilst jumping 10% Manners whilst performing individual show, Judge’s ride and or Final Ride Round 30% Conformation and type.

Whenever judges experience difficulty separating individual entries to achieve a final placing, having used the above criteria, then the BSPA require that Colour and Markings
become the deciding factor in order to achieve a result.

Indeed, this has always made me wonder why the heck they have "Coloured Horse" ridden showing classes if the colour / markings of the horse dont come into it !!! You may as well not have the class at all in that case coz the markings on the horse are then meaningless anyway !!!

But otherwise you may end up with a beautifully marked horse with shocking conformation and movement winning?!!! The only thing all the horses in a coloured class have in common is their colour. That is why it is so difficult to mark them, as you could be marking a sports horse against a cob. I personally just did normal showing with mine, and the occasional coloured class, but if yiy had a judge that like cobs and your on a fine built horse, the cob will prob win

Certainly at lower levels!!!

We took our traditional cob to a BSPA show a few weeks ago, to do the colour and markings. We are no experts, but he is true to type, and has no glaring conformation problems. He went in the colour and markings class because it is 90% C & M and only 10% conformation, and he is a true piebald, and very evenly marked, almost symetrical. He was very obedient in hand, if a little stuffy, and was placed last, I think out of 16. Now, we only show for fun, so hadn't checked the rules but when we came home I did, and I really couldn't understand why he was at the bottom when we thought he fulfilled the criteria just fine! Going back to be happy hackers again, it took ages to get his feathers clean too!

I agree - I have been in these classes and just couldn't figure out why certain horses were at one end - unfortunately this is a class where is really is down to what the judge likes to look at - great if they like your colour and marking and not great if they don't.

I will be doing ridden as well as in hand next year and will drop the colourama classes.
