Hi all,

I am new to showing!

I've spent this year doing a bit of in hand with my youngster locally, but over the next few years I would really like to start taking it a little more seriously as I have really really enjoyed it, and I think he has too! Especially as he is just back from breaking, he will now spend the winter off maturing, and will come back to work next year.

I was nosing through last years HOYS pics in the class of Coloured Native/Cob/Traditional Ridden and I was wondering does anyone know what height these cobs are?

Can anyone who knows showing well, or is a judge tell me a bit about what is looking for in ridden showing in a traditional coloured class? I want to know in advance if I am wasting my time haha and if ponyface will be too small!

We definitely need to grow some mane first!

Thanks in advance xx

They're split at 148 or 153cm horses and ponies depending on society. So you can do it at any height, you see trads regularly down to around 13.2 and natives that are shetlands.

Don't jump straight into HOYS classes! They cost a fortune to do so you are better to spend a season or two learning to ropes and both you and your pony will be ring wise and knowledgeable before you enter the melee of the big boys ring! Go and watch some classes and ask the guys up at the top for tips. For the most part showing is a really friendly place to be. Those who do the big qualifiers and do well - amateur or professional - will normally be quite happy to spend 5mins giving you advice so don't be afraid to ask!

Performance wise - the pony should go sweetly on the bridle, have loose movement, crisp transactions and a good gallop. Depending on the size of your pony and which class it fits in you may get a ride judge so make sure your pony is used to being ridden by other people in different ways - longer reins, shorter reins, more leg, less leg etc.

Most importantly have fun!
