My two 9 month old foals have been going out in the field during the day together. This morning i saw the colt playing and then gettin on the filly's back! Have phoned my vet and he says seperate them as the colt could get her in foal. Is this right?

Also i have no problem with putting the colt out with my geldings but would it be ok to put the filly out in the field with the broodmares - as one is her mother? (they were weaned at 6 months)

Otherwise i can put her in the field next to the mares but there she would be on her own?

Any thoughts please!!??

I was led to believe that is possible for a colt to sucessfully cover a mare from being around six months.
I have my this years filly back out with mum they were weaned at 6 months spend approx 9 week totally seperated. They were re-introduced slowly for short periods of time to start with and things are now fine, it did help that i have a yearling filly which she is kept with and always comes in and goes out at the same time as, she now happily grazes alongside mum and hasnt attempted to suckle since she was weaned but does always pair back up with the other youngster.
