I have an 8month old colt who for the past few days hasnt touched his grain. Which is weird cause he never leaves a drop in his bucket. Hes had grain since he was 4 days old and now just doesnt seem interested in it. He does drink his water, and was eating his hay really good until the other day when i noticed him just nibbling at it. Eating like one straw at a time. Hes been in a stall for the past couple of months working on weaning and ground work. I just started turning him out in his own corral during the day and back up at night. that the only change ive made in any of his routine. Im worried it may be colic... but hes drinking water, and is pooping regularly. There is nothing lodged in his mouth that seems to be creating stress in his mouth. Im at a total loss. Even the vet doesnt know what to think of it from what ive told him over the phone. He cant come out until tomorrow afternoon to check on him, but i just pray there is nothing serious with this. He hasnt eaten any grain in almost 3 days.

Is this for real? Hard cereal feed from 4 days old??? And now stabled for months while he's weaned, only recently givenany turnaout and then on his own? If he's not eating his hay, not eating his bucket feed, hardly touched anything in THREE days for gods sake, then you need the vet pronto. It would firghten the life out of me! I'd certainly be thinking low grade colic or ulcers or worse. Low grade colic can become life threatening very fast. Poor lad, sounds a miserable life for a herd animal, evolved for the great outdoors.

You obviously have no idea what it's like to have horses. A lot of people keep horses stalled. Especially young ones. And he was turned out with his mom until he was 5 months old. He ate the grain cause his mom ate grain. A lot of babies follow they ways of their mothers. That's how they learn. My vet was called after the first day but said it wasn't colic. Which makes sense because he's drinking plenty of water. He's coming out tomorrow to draw blood.

My horse was weaned and separated within a week, bought to me and went straight out with the herd... Never had a problem and certainly never needed to box him in for months. Little to no appetite in four days... Something very wrong, any vet worth his salt would not have called via phone but would have insisted on visiting. Amazed he is still pooing if he has not eaten for four days! I seriously hope this is a wind up, :(

This surely is another troll post? Feeding grain to a 4 day old colt, not getting a vet out when said colt hasn't eaten for days... Certainly hope it's not for real!

I have to say i did think the same... but although only a few post under OP's belt, there is a post about obtaining a colt from last year... so going on the premis that sadly this could be true... I decided to take it as such... just in case.

The irony of feeding a four day old colt or filly grain, having it off feed for four days/ boxed for a few months and only consultation regarding this with vet via phone, yet saying that BOF 'clearly knows nothing about horse' - priceless!
