hi my boy had big worm burden when i bought him 9weeks ago. after treating him and clearing it up i have been waiting for his weight to bloom. he doesnt look thin but he has big thick coat on. i can feel his ribs when i put my hand on him. feed wise he has 2 large haynets 1 morning 1 at night. theres always some left in the net so i no he doesnt need any more hay. he has 2 bucket feed morning and night. the feed i use is stud and youngstock (spillers) he has 3 big handfulls per feed and original molichop 2 big handfulls eaach feed. he is turned out in the day from 7.30am bought in 4.30. i have recently moved his fencing i no he has grass as they are not touching the hay i put out for them at the min. is there anything i can add to feed to up his calories. i no i need to be careful not to overfeed vits to stop him growing to fast. can any1 see what im doing wrong.

You haven't said what age his is or what breed/type. If he is a yearling/2yo it might take some time to see a change as he is growing and a lot of energy from the feed will be going into going upwards rather than outwards. Is he perky in himself - kicking up his heels in the field with his mates or a bit lethargic?

Call one of the large feed manufacturers - dodson and horrell are fantastic - they give great free advice - call a couple of them and get a more rounded picture of what you should be doing. You also need to make sure you are weighing his feed as by the sound of it you could be wasting a whole load of feed by over-feeding in each meal. Can you get up at lunchtime and feed again? 3 x smaller feeds will be much more beneficial than 2 x huge ones.

Also, buy a good quality balancer like Blue Chip or Top Spec and keep up the good quality ad lib hay.

Good luck.

hes 10months old when he arrived he was very popped bellied after worming the pop belly went he weighs 275 and around 13.3 hh when vet did vaccinations 4 weeks ago she said he was a little under weight so started putting morning feed in. hes very lively in field with his f6 yr old friend running round bucking he is quiet to handle apart from when picking up back feet it gets bit tempermental with a warning with tail swishing then a kick but im sure we will over come that bit. vet checked heart and lungs said they were all fine. checked his joints as he only creats on 1 back leg (billy ba**ard leg) as i call it. but she said all seemed fine
