hi guys 2 days ago i noticed my colts muscle twitching on his back end over stifel area. he seemed uncomfortable as i kept running backwards 10 mins later seemed fine. today i have gone to turn him out i put his headcollar on and began to lead out his stable and his back leg seemed to lock. once he walked few steps he was fine. he runs round his field and bucks and prances round and has no lameness. any idea what it could be, i mentioned it to my vet yesterday but she didnt say anything about it. could it be the cold as he isnt rugged at all. it seems to be when he is stabled it happens,

Sounds like it could be locking stifle (upward fixation of the patella), it's common in youngsters and usually improves when the muscles get stronger through work but I would still get the vet out for a look & if this vet is not interested then ask for another

Sounds a bit like locking patella (locking stifle) It is quite common in young male horses that are not muscled correctly. Most grow out of it, which is probably why the vet was not to concerned. One of mine looked like his leg was hanging of until you made him walk backwards or turned him in a tight circle until it went back in place.

X posted :)

My mare had this problem last year after laminitis :( vet said it was were she suddenly dropped weight and lost all the fat around the joint which was allowing it to slip slightly. All I did was call her and explain symptoms and send her a video clip of what was going on and she diagnosed her over the phone and told me to give her oil and lunge her through it and within a few weeks she was sound again :) definatly worth a call to your vet for some advice!

ok thanks will this affect him in the futer being ridden ect. he doesnt have any muscle as when i bought him he was under weight and riddled in worms

Kylee86 - shouldn't do, my mare was a bit sore for a while but you wouldn't think anything had happened now and it was less than 6 months ago now :)
