Just wondered if anyone has tried Comb spurs & if they are any good??
I have a sensitive skin but lazy TB & have tried 'normal' spurs but he just over reacts and it makes him worse! They are very short spurs but the over reaction is a bit rediculous. I thought of trying the comb spurs for schooling / jumping - but just looking for advice before I spend the cash.

Hoefully the above link will work, if not they're available on Ebay - just type in comb spurs!

Thoughts appreciated!

Oooh never seen those before.

Have you tried taking your legs away from your sides and giving him one big kick? I have to do this with mine sometimes (don't ride him in spurs as he's a baby), then you hardly have to use your legs, just a small flick of a schooling whip if they start to slow again will soon remind them. Otherwise its easy to keep nagging them when they're lazy which makes it worse.

Many thanks for both your replies.
I have a nice long 'fleck' schooling whip which works well but you do have to keep tapping him up to keep any impulsion! I thought spurs might be a good option, especially as I've shown him in the retrained racehorse class & all the others were wearing spurs.
I've also thought about the 'impulse spurs' - can they completely over react to these aswell? They are the same length as the regular spurs I've already tried. I was only thinking of the comb spurs as it seems the smallest 'spur' on the market.
Also, if I persevere with the regular spurs will he get used to them & no longer over react? I've tried them twice and been very careful & light with my aids but he just shoots forward & hollows!

Impulse spurs roll as you use your leg and they come in contact with the horse. . .i think then you have got a less of a jabbing poking effect on the horse.

Might be worth a go

I've brought some of these for Oscar but haven't had a chance to use them yet! He shoots off with normal spurs but hoping that the comb spurs will just be a slight back up from my leg!

I used them for the same reasons my lazy horses reaction to normal spurs was bucking and they don't give you extra marks for that in a dressage test (unaff) !! but they do remove marks for lacking impulsion.
I've also used them for jumping (bsja) they helped.
I've since moved onto normal spurs i think they helped my horse get used to spurs in general.
I generally save spurs for shows or lessons only.
he's still lazy though but i cant do much about that !!!
