Combined training?

I'm thinking of taking the baby horse to have a go at this in a few weeks, Never done the class before. It would just be the first class which I think is p13 and then 2'3" sj. Has anyone any advice re dress code for horse and rider, scoring, how they build (Its at south view i think) and anything else you can think of, some photos would be fab. xx

I do a lot of this with my youngster
-- usually dress code is standard SJ/dressage; i.e. light breeches, showing/hacking jacket, correct tack for class. Scoring round here tends to be

100 - DressageScore = dressage penalties
+ jumping faults = overall penalties
And then on jumping time for equal penalties!

Thankyou thats very helpfull, would you say it's worth having a go then with a youngster? He'll probably be a little tired after that but it just sounds a nice class! Would a navy jacket be ok then? How about martingales etc, can you change tack between classes? Many thanks

Navy jacket should be fine and we are allowed to change tack, though obviously check the rules of your specific one, just in case!

I think they're brill for youngsters as helps to give them an athletic, all round education. For people like me, amateur riders who hack a lot but like to do a bit of everything, they are perfect ... and saves on pennies too haha (round here one dressage class is £12, one SJ class is £8ish and one combined training is usually no more than £14).

Great, I've just filled in the entry form and written the cheque :-D so we shall see what happens! Its £20, but I think it's some kind of qualifier, still not bad considering what we pay for classes seperatley as you rightly stated! It's not a regular thing so what the heck! Fingers crossed now.. x

Most combined training are judged on style for jumping, so you get faults for a martingale (not many). Its a great class for a youngster, and the courses are usually easy..

Oh wasn't aware of the martingale issue, thanks for mentioning. Although I suppose if you need one you need one, lost points or not he he. Any other tips re turnout, boots, etiquette etc? nervous! x

I've done a fair few combined training classes and never been judged on style (Lucky for me otherwise we'd keep coming last )

No it wasn't style jumping. I was asked to judge a combined training for a local RC and they gave me their rules - can't find them (just looked!) and am not sure if it was RC rules or BHS, but it was on style as well as faults.. The old system didn't use to be on style though, so perhaps the ones without style were using that system?

Its a great starter class for a youngster.

None of the combined trainings I've ever competed at or seen have ever been marked on style; this has been at several different venues. So you'll probably be perfectly fine to use a martingale

its a fantastic event for young horses

try and get SJ done first if the ring steward lets you (Terri) as she let me and it was better to have baby horse on full alert for SJ round and more tired for dressage than the other way round

The dressage was judge by a BD judge when i went, and the course built by BSJA course builder also

Brill show for first time out! Go for it

Dont worry about results etc, just enjoy it for the day! My boy jumped a clear in SJ and had about 58% or so in dressage

Nice relaxed atmosphere there for South View, no pressure etc

Dress sounds good, perhaps a tweed if you have one but if not dont worry!
Some people plaited but i didnt, as tbh didnt think i would get a good enough dressage score for a placing

A friend of mine won the 2'3 on a 4 yr old so it is do-able
