Comfrey

Well comfrey is a good painkiller, so it counld help relieve pain. But remember you can only feed it everyday for a fornight before you must give them a break from it! Something to do with toxins, i think! For my horses tendon injury we iced it everyday and just turned him out for 6 months...

Mine is undergoing stem cell therapy and on box rest atm its being cold hosed and Ice gelled twice daily! Just wanted to see if I could aid it any further

I always feed it to anything 'broken' needing box rest - its familiar name is knitbone for a reason, it helps lay down new tissue. I've used it for bone and tendon, most notably old mare cracked a splint bone years ago - it mended alot faster than it was supposed to. I've fed it for several weeks in the past with no noticeable side effects, just read the dosage instructions.

I found it good for a small bone chip type of fracture and have used it for tendons before now. I bought in loose by the ounce from the Health Food Shop in Solihull town centre, not sure if they still do it though. Very good stuff.

I used to blanch it in warm water then let it cool and put it in cling film, wrap it around a tube of something and put it in the freezer. take it out and apply it directly to the tendon so that you are icing it at the same time. (wrap it round something to make easier to apply to the tendon shape.. I use a rolling pin)
If you plant some in a tub it grows like mad, I have one growing down at my yard all the time. If you feed the leaves be sure to crush them a bit in your hand first as they don't feel as spikey on their mouths then.. Mine don't bother anymore though and just eat it as is.
The internal implicataions are due to the fact that comfrey contains the same sort of toxins as rag wort but in a lower dosage. I have fed it without ill affect, normally for the first couple of weeks that the horse is injured.

I am feeding it to my mare who has injured both hind suspensorys. It advises not to feed for more than 30 days in any one time, she's been on it about 2 weeks so far, so I'm going to take her off it now and see how she goes.
