It's probably not the cheapest around unless you can find it on offer at 4 bales for the price of 3, as I did when I changed from straw to shavings. I like it as it is heavier than normal shavings, meaning that it drops through the shaving fork easily - hence it is quick to muck out. In the winter with the horse out in the day, I found I was putting in a new bale about every 5 days.
I use a similar product called cushion bed. I changed to it from normal shavings when the supply became so inconsistent here.
I wouldn't go back now I pay 6.50 per bale and that includes delivery, so pricewise its on a par with the shavings prices round here, the difference being I can always get it unlike shavings!
how does it compare with absorbency of wet? i am looking at buying a pallet but ive never seen or used it before so any advice would be greatly appreciated.
prices i have received so far are cheaper than shavings round me which are pretty small bales also.
I tried it and didn't get on with it. Not saying it's a bad bedding, but didn't work for me and Genie! Very quickly Genie was back on Aubiose which worked out cheaper as I was having to put less in.
ive looked at aubiose too. i am so undecided and being so far out of the way need to order a pallet and dont want to get it wrong.
with aubiose you need to dampen and leave wet in, am i right in thinking? really i dont want to do this as I like to keep the beds clean etc and dont want the smell of urine lingering which i find no matter how clean the shavings are there is still a smell.
ive had a sample of wood pellets too but found they seemed very fine and not sure if this would get dusty if i keep taking the wet out.
I just dont want to make the wrong decision as i will need to buy anything out of the ordinary in bulk. decent shavings are £8 per bale round here and the £6.50 alternative I dont feel are very good and with 2 horses the costs mount up very quickly
I use wood pellets in my mare's stable and shavings in my Welsh A Gelding's - reasons - Mare is very wet and the pellets absorb everything wet and I find it very very easy with a big messy mare -
Gelding - well he is so clean and tiny that I only seem to use one bag every 3 weeks so no need to worry too much about cost with that one.
Pellets
They are not dusty in the winter - I assume they may get bad in the summer but I may swap to shavings for the summer months as neither will be in much.
No smell - everything is absorbed - some people leave all wet alone all week - I do not.
Very quick to muck out - no waste - shavings fork picks up poo and wet - everything else falls through.
I only use a very small bed (width of stable but only about half way to door) on top quality, thick, heavy mats.
Cheap - wow £3.25 a bag compared to £8.50.
Stable is megga dry - right up to the door, round water bucket - everywhere - super!
I can muck out both my stables into one large (not huge) wheelbarrow.
However, if you like a big thick bed and big banks you will not like pellets - you have to keep thinking of the horse not being a nesting animal and that really all they want is to be dry and out of drafts.
