Just ordered 10 bales back to what I used before, thought about all options but he is a messy but not wet horse in a 12x12 stable. How many bales to start a bed off?

If he's really messy why not just put half a bale or even less down and take the worst of it out each time. really with rubber matting down, all you need is enough to soak up the wee... I am considering doing this with my messy one

cos it would be three bales a week that way! Bless him he doesn't like being in. Thinking of making him a sheltered outdoor pen. Out of the wind but not in a stable. He just walks it round and round. He gets skipped out at 8pm too!

I used to skip out at around 9 pm, but as the muck heap wasn't that close I'd leave it in a trug in the corner of my horse's stable. She used to watch me doing this, sometimes moving out the way of the poo for me. Bless her there was always one or two poos in or near the trug in the morning, she really tried! Do you think horses can be litter trained? Be good if they could. Now we've moved she just does it anywhere again.

I love comfy bed - best I've found for my dirty beast. I used 6 to start but then added another 3 in the first week just to top it up once it settled. The important thing I find with mine is to firmly squash the bed down and not take the wet out as it keeps the bed together to stop them kicking it around.

He is now litter trained (which is saving me a fortune in bedding, and lots of time mucking out). I leave one fresh poo in where I want him to go and he then does all his other poos on top of it so I just remove the poo pile, straighten the bed and I'm done.

I use 7 or 8 to start a bed off in a 12x12, works very well for me & the mucky-duck :)
This is leaving a 18inch gap at the front & is over rubber matting (matting just happens to be there)
Since xmas have added 2 & bed still looking okay, in use for 12 to 16 hrs a day on average. (usually about 15 on non-work days).

Best to start off with a good covering :)

Eight gulp! Will be sorting it out on Saturday. Any tips on bed laying? I can never do those smart level banks you see in some stables :(
