I am intending to replace my Charles Owen Ultra Lite skull after about 4/5 years. However, it has never been comfortable, always causing aching over the eyes/forehead after 20 minutes, so I have generally only used it for XC/high crash factor days! I have read that skulls are generally better for round heads, so I assume mine is oval and wondered if anyone can suggest a skull that might fit better than the Ultra Lite? I have a small face so dont want to look mushroom -head :-p Thanks

I have a small (6 7/8) oval-ish head and I've always found the Champion Junior Jockey type skulls a good fit. You do have to keep trying different ones until you find a brand/type that suits you!

That's useful as I am also 6 7/8 (and assume oval). I did try on a friend's Champion Junior and it felt OK so maybe that's the way to go... thank you.

I have a champion one (my had shape isnt that well suited to skulls) but it doesnt often give me headache (unless its really hot weather.

i have an oval shaped head and get teh same pain as you describe from most skull caps - generally wear peaked caps as they fit so much better - but the Charles Owen Pro II fits really well - i was actually after the HS1 but that was an awful fit on me - doh!

it all depends on the shape of your head - I cannot wear Champion hats, they are seriously uncomfortable for me - but if I put on a Charles Owen it fits like a glove. When i had a saddlery I sold Champion and Charles Owen hats as well as a couple of other brands and found that Champion and Charles Owen suited completely differenthead shapes and people were either one or the other. No difference for me between how a Charles Owen Skull feels compared with a Charles Owen velvet. I know I can wear a size 2 / 7 in a any Charles Owen. When you go to the saddlery please ask for help from the qualified fitter as there are tweaks that can be made in store and advice on trypes to suit.

I have an oval head and have always found Champions tradtional style hats suit me.
I now have a Champion Ventair Skull and that fits well too.

It's a brand most shops seem to stock so you shouldn't have any problem finding one to try on.

your hat should never give you a headache it means it doesnt fit properly!
make sure you get it properly fitted at a shop
i used to wear a charles owen junior but i foud it got bigger and fell off !!! now i wear a champion ventair and its really comfy and it adjusts really easily with ties at the back
most people are usuall a champion or a charles owen so just try lots and im sure you will find a good one just make sure yo get it fitted properly

Thanks for the further tips, I will certainly ask a trained fitting person to check for me. This thread has been very helpful so thanks again.

I have an oval head and Charles Owen hats just don't fit me properly so have always had Champion (apart from my beagler). I've got the Champion Ventair skull which is comfy, although does not keep me cool
