I sadly need to get a new saddle as my beautiful Black Country saddle doesn't fit my new horse at all. I need a saddle that is comfy for the rider as anything hard like a Stubben gives me terrible back ache. My Black Country has a really squishy seat which I find really comfy. Wondered if there were any other brands that were particularly soft to ride in? Preferably a jump saddle but would consider forward cut GP. Budget of £500 but happy to go 2nd hand. Has to be leather, I don't do synthetics! Coco pops for lunch if you can suggest anything!

I love 'Ideals' with the 'wide' seat which I hunt in. Hugely comfortable and soft on one's derriere!!!

Just picked up a second hand Ideal Grandee (gp) for £450.

Have a look at old jeffries ones. Also, years ago Derby house did a range that were very similar in design to albions, if there are any knocking about second hand they'd be within your budget. Or even an older albion.

I love my Ideal Event, its so comfy and squishy like you described. Went for a 4 hour hack last weekend and wasn't sore at all!

I loved my Ideal GP saddle. Unfortunately I have an Albion GP for my horse and although it fits him I find it uncomfortable.

We have Ideals and love them. My daughter has a new wintec which is great. Very different to the early synthetics. Failing that, what about a lovely Heather Moffat gel seat saver?

Would love another black country but not sure I can afford it! Thanks for the suggestions so far, keep them coming!

And therein lies the problem - everyone's idea of comfort is very subjective. Plus, the better your saddle fits the horse, the more comfy you'll find it, seriously. And within brands are saddles that might suit both you and your horse, saddles that you'll find comfy but wil never fit your horse, and saddles that will fit your horse but you'll hate. The best thing you can do is work with a good fitter who can bring out a range of used and synthetic saddles (there really aren't any good adult sized leather saddles at that budget) and see what you get on with and what fits! Ultimately if you have a tricky horse you may find that you don't have much choice and you may have to compromise very slightly on comfort, especially if you can't buy brand new bench made where you can specify things like extra foam in the seat.
