My horse's fly rug does this -

attachment.php

And then the velcro rubs him raw :(

Perhaps it's a size issue, it's certainly tight across his chest by the point the photo was taken - not sure if that's the cause or a symptom though! It's a Derby House rug, which I love because of the elasticated neck panel (HATE short necks!) - and they're on offer super cheap at the moment! But I can't tell from the website if the design has changed at all, so don't dare buy a new one in case it's the same.

I'll replace if if I can't fix it, but I'd need something that wasn't going to do that (!), has a belly panel, elasticated neck, and doesn't cost the earth! And maybe wide across the shoulders I suppose... can anyone suggest anything? :) He's either getting eaten by midgies or getting velcro-burn, not a fun choice!

Ideally toys have the clip on the other ring so the rug isn't pulling apart but I guess that's not an option in your case as it's already snug on the chest

If you like the rug in every other way I think I'd be inclined to sew some patches over the Velcro as it's clearly of no use anyway

Thanks both!

It happens I think because the top strap is set too far in and down on the chest, this means the extra material folds in and down and causes rubs. I find this on a lot of rugs so I just alter the buckle position to fit each horse.

That might help - I got a sewing awl thing for Christmas so I should maybe learn how to use it! I'm not sure where it should be sitting instead though - I know this might be really awkward but I don't suppose you have a picture somewhere that might explain it?!

Aaah ok - well I can loosen the buckles on the clips, they're about as tight as they go - I couldn't see how loosening them would help when the velcro is in a fixed position but it would make sense to reach the other ring. I'll try that first - then yes, perhaps like you say patch over it if that doesn't help.

I wasn't sure whether it was the velcro being rubbish (replace it / cover it) or the fit of the rug, or what. I don't mind doing a botch job on it (I've already sewn the belly flap in two cos it was round his knees!) - it's a bit tatty now so I may as well see what I can do before replacing it :)

Mark Todd ultra has a stretch neck, belly cover and isn't too expensive. I found it was tight across the shoulders, until I realized the leg straps at the back were too tight and pulling the rug back, loosened them and pulled the rug up, it now fits great ! Would fully recommend it. My derby house rugs have crap fit at the front

well at the moment all the stress is on the outer ring and the strap is pulling there which doesn't help keep the velcro together, if you can clip on to the other ring the stress is beyond the velcro and it has a chance of staying done up

Shires ultraflector and sweet itch rugs are superb, not too pricey. Your current rug looks too tight across the chest/shoulders and looks to be pulling back uncomfortably.

Thank you, I'll definitely try this first. And thanks everyone else for the other brand suggestions, I'll look into those - I already have a shires turnout and was quite pleased with the fit (pony chunked up quite a bit this year!) but I didn't see any fly sheets with the features I wanted... will have another look at the sweet itch one (yuck to the pee issue though haha!)
