So this weekend was the first round of the National Horse Boarding Championships, held at the NHB Centre in Seisdon near Wolverhampton. As a new sport there are lots of issues to iron out but it was a brilliant weekend, full of exciting races.

Firstly an idea of the rules. Each team comprises a horse, a horse rider and a mountain boarder, connected to the horse by a quick release tow rope and handle. Each team races each other team twice per heat, once in each lane, to keep it fair (lane B was a little bumpy!) in a head to head drag race of 100m from a standing start. Two points are awarded for a win (first board to cross the line, not horse), 1 point for a second place finish and zero for a fall/fail to finish. Points are then accumulated to work out who you race in a final knock out phase to decide the overall placings. Simple enough?

There were a few issues to sort out on day 1 as a couple of the horses got a little over excited so we spent some time working with them, we did lose a couple at this point as they got too silly and it was decided in the interests of safety that they should withdraw. But then we got into some serious races! Holy cow I have never been so fast!

Frank from Team Perfectly Frank demonstrated exactly why I have nicknamed him 'Frank the Destroyer'.

He has been decribed as a tractor with a turbo charger and a dodgy clutch...every gear change and acceleration came with a 'whumph' of power that none of the boarders could hang on to!, so on day one he was sadly out of the competition due to lack of working boarders!

The stealth contenders were Team Cold Rein, with Jack the standardbred type pony taking a break from his usual job as a logging pony showing an exceptional turn of foot and taking the competitors by surprise.

By day 2, Team Perfectly Frank had recruited a new boarder, Po, with the task of hanging on to Franks awesome power, and the races kicked off with a vengence! Team Ginja Ninja took the race to them with some nail biting photo finishes -

Then sadly Franks power got the best of Po with a crash into the crowd and a twisted ankle knocking him out of the competition. The Ginja Ninja then withdrew due to bad behaviour in the start box, the excitement had just got too much for her so she was pulled out to quiet down and do some quiet schooling with it later.
So that left Team Cold Rein and team Ihorse (me!), who had been consistent out of the start box on every race.

Team Ihorse finished on top with a total of 36 points over Cold Reins 27. We also won the award for top speed (speedos attached to the boards record the fastest speed on each run) with a breakneck speed of 35mph!!! (all in 100m)
The mighty Rohan...he might not be the prettiest, but he is a legend of a horse..

Just to add, the event and the horse I ride, are sponsored by a vet, who are happy with the way it is done. Safety of horses, riders, boarders and audience are of primary concern so despite the impact on the competition, they were quick to withdraw any horse if necessary.

Credit to the boarders, they hit 35mph knowing for sure that they will crash at the end...It is most definitely NOT for the faint hearted!

A little video if interested;

Next round is going to be held at the Three Counties Show at Malvern, June 17 - 19th, come and check it out!

Saw it been done on countryfile (BBC) couple of years ago - thought it looked quite fun, but there wasnt any info on web anywhere how to get started!

Just look up National Horse Boarding Championships on facebook, you can contact the organisers through that!

And nuts is our middle name... boarders, riders and horses!

Ah alas... the horse I had who I think would have been perfect for it (16.3 of NH TB that went like s**t of a shovel).... is dead !

Something I'm curious about-the attachement of the boarder to the saddle? How much force is that putting through the saddle? Obviously this sport is in its infancy, would it be a possibility that a special harness would be a better idea in terms of longevity of tack and horses back (a saddle not being designed to take weight like that?)

Ah, sorry to hear that wench. It's quite interesting in terms of horses. Whilst the 4 teams we ended up with were going like stink (consistently hitting 30mph plus), the horse has to have a good brain in the start box as it has to wait til it's boarder and the one next to it are hooked up and ready. It then has to accelerate out in a way that the boarder can handle, with no slack in the rope to hit and straight. Rohan accelerates smoothly, like a motorbike, smoothly, so out of 20 odd races i only lost Dan on the start line once or twice (helps that he is an exceptionally good boarder and knows his horse inside out, a lot of the boarders don't really know the horse and how it will jump out). We won 17 races i think, lost 2 and fell twice.

There was an ex-racer there who would have kicked backsides speed wise but lost the plot after 2 starts and couldn't continue, so it does take a special kind of horse. Plus it has to pull up fast, as at some competitions there is only 40m to stop in. And an amazing boarder to hold on of course! These guys are hard as nails!

Anyone is welcome to give it a try in training though!

Henry never raced, and was quite happy to stand still dozing until action required, and he was easy to control the amount of pace he had!

Excellent question. The rope they rig to the saddle to clip the tow rope to is wrapped around the saddle in a special way. What we have found is that if it is done properly you shouldn't notice any movement of the saddle. I am no expert but as I say, the vets have approved the set up of it and physio check the horses regularly, and as a rider you can tell the horse barely feels the boarder at the back, they tow so so easily, there is not even any pressure on the breastplate usually, although every horse ought to wear one. I can imagine the system evolving, but if I thought it would hurt the horse then there is no way that i would take part.

He was a special horse - we tried eventing/dressage/sj - usually involving him being in a really good mood and doing well, or having a temper tantrum. Also tried endurance, had a temper tantrum on that as well when he was convinced that he knew the route, not me that had the map.

Anything that involved as least work as possible would have been ideal for him!

Rohan was a pro! :D

Just to say i travelled down from Scotland to experience this sport for myself, didnt know anyone so it was an entirely new experience for me! Everyone was really friendly, the horses were loving it, a vet was on site and everything was done safely. :) I am now an avid supporter and cant wait to compete! :D

Your not going to have such an easy time winning in July KatPT! :p haha

Looks like great fun! I can imagine it is a sport horse could quickly get adicted to! The boarders must be mad though!
I also used to own a mare who would have excelled at this apart from the standing at the start bit...

Have you seen the vids of the guys in Europe who go over jumps as well?

It looks awesome! I would love to have a go, I reckon me and my brother would make a good team (he's a very good skate boarder) and I'm just slightly nuts :p Not sure my horse would cope with it though...

You should do it! :D I tried my WB x TB yesterday (shes 16.2hh, 14yrs old and an ex showjumper)and she took to it really quickly. Think it took 15 mins to get her used to it and she really only had a problem when the boarder would bounce on the board to turn it around and this was at a standstill. No problems when she was pulling. :) I also had 2 of my other ponies doing it and they took to it straight away with no problems.

Haha, horse is unfortunately on the sick bench for the foreseeable future (though I'm sure she would disagree with me and give it ago!) otherwise she would have loved it :D Have to get a better paid job/marry rich and get another one specifically for this I think! Is there any where that does *taster days* where you dont need your own horse?

I love this! I am still intending to come and have a go at some point - just need to get the rest of life out of the way first....

Wow what fun! I reckon j would be brilliant at this - his acelleration is like no other horse I know and he'd stand quietly at the start no problem at all!
