I have a small rescue dog that is a bit of a loner, he is not aggressive to other dogs but tends to ignore them. On the odd occasion he has been to a dogsitters and he doesn't play with the other dogs, just sleeps on the sofa ! I have seen another little rescue dog that sounds as if his temperament is very similar, an older dog, that is quiet and doesn't like to be fussed. I am quite tempted, as in previous years I have had two dogs, setters,(which I know have quite different personalities) and there are so many dogs needing homes. The rescue is quite a long way from me and I don't want to waste their time. Do you think two dogs with this sort of temperament can be happy together ?

I would think as long as there is no aggression between them there is no problem. I have always had at least 2 dogs together and most of them have not actually played with one another. My present 2 definitely don't but I think dogs like having company and I feel better leaving them alone :) Go for it and good luck.

If it is a bitch I would give it a go, the rescue would insist on the dogs meeting to see that they get along. I would recommend a bitch though as there is less chance of your dog being picked on and he may be more accepting of a lady sharing his home and sofa.

I have a couple of JRTs at work who are just like this - they are both dogs that typically keep themselves to themselves and are not at all interested in other dogs. One is quite aloof with people too though the other is reasonably friendly. They have lived together for about a year, sharing a kennel, and seem pretty happy to have each other around. They never play, but enjoy a peaceful co-existence which seems to suit them both.
They are both male and I wouldn't really be worried about having a bitch over a dog - just give them a try. I always find bitches bossier anyway.

Well I have had to rethink. Got a friend to bring her dog round to me as I have never had another dog in the house since I got mine. All hell broke loose, and this is a dog that mine has been to stay with on a couple of weekends. He is not an aggressive type but he is very home and me orientated. Shame really but don't want to upset the applecart if he is that bothered.
