Companion horse questions

Clover will be moving home in August, so now need to start thinking about a companion for her.

Q: Should I get one larger horse or two smaller ones?
Bearing in mind
1) We have very good grazing
2) I read up that horses tend to get on best with companions of a similar size/stamp(?)
3) The horse will need to be ok with being alone (if getting one horse) coming into the stable while Clover and I are doing things

Taking into consideration the above, what are your opinions?

Also looked in WHW and RSCPA but no large companions there - thinking of trying Moorcroft too, but wondering if an ex racer could be a blessing (they are usually so nice to handle) or will get hot when left alone?

You want a bigger one (or two). No idea what would suit best but from the tone of your post I think that sounds like your preferred option!

And actually i agree they like to move around together/scratch withers and so forth and that can be easier if they are similar size/shape.

Could you find someone local with a 'broken' horse they are looking to rest on grass livery? Or, if the move home is permanent, I'm /sure/ there will be a few charities that *do* have larger companions. Ask on here for suggestions near you?
 
I moved my horse from my place of work where I had 6 hunters to look after to a friend of a friends place where there was just my gelding and her mare and he very quickly became obsessed with her mare. Because we rode at different times I found getting my horse in and doing anything with him was a complete nightmare. He became stressy and bad mannered and generally unpleasant in his desire to get back to "his" mare. Of course he was left by himself when the mare was ridden to get worked up, he was better left out though. I think I would prefer to get 3 rather than 2, I think it would be easier. Though on the other hand if you got a sane ex-racehorse that's sound you could get someone to ride him with you for company if you wanted.
 
That's a nice idea PinkLilly, however I don't know how rescues would react to me "perhaps" getting someone else in to ride what is effectively their horse? Don't know about the loopholes of that?
 
I don't know about rescue centres but the point-to-point yards local to me are often looking to re-home a horse that's retired from racing and often they are free so maybe worth looking into.
 
Another vote for an ex-racehorse. :D

I was given this mare as a companion for my filly. She was happy to be left in the field while I took the filly out for feeding etc... I did later put my chestnut mare in with these two and three works even better. ;)

Hello there,

I am looking for a wonderful private home for my beautiful yet injured mare to live out her days...She cannot live out though...she is 16hh and an angel to handle etc..she is just a big dog. let me know if you are interested.
