The Vet would like my horse to have 3 months turned away as part of the treatment for his dodgy suspensory ligament!

in 3 weeks time, a girl is leaving our yard and moving her horse to parents new house (they have built & are just about to move into). She is planning on getting some other people in with their horses and charging them livery etc. Fair enough. But initially she doesn't have any company for her horse. So I suggested she could have my boy as a companion on a 3month loan.

Seemed like a good plan all round as it seemed to help everyone.

So I said to her yesterday we need to sort details of loan etc.
She then turned round and said well it will be 10pound per week grass livery but I don't mind checking on your horse daily for you and giving him his feed.

So it now feels a bit pointless moving him as I could pay £10 a week grass livery at my yard and keep an eye on him myself?
I though I was helping her out.

Anyway it got me thinking a) not sure whether to move my horse at all. b) is it easy to find companion loan type homes for your horse?

It is not that easy to find good companion homes, you will see plenty advertised but there is the potential to be sending your horse off to an uncertain future. Since yours is only off for a few months it isn't so much a companion home you want as a recuperation livery.

If the price is the same where you are now (and that is very cheap BTW) I would stay put, no point upsetting your horse when you are supposed to be keeping it quiet.

for the sake of £10 a week for grass livery i would keep him where he is & manage him yourself , that way you hopefully have the best chance of him coming back into work sucessfully

3 months might seem like a long time but in reality it will fly by

I think I agree with everyone, and I asked the original question, LOL

It is nice though to see if others agree with you.

I too would keep him at his yard and with me if he were mine.

OP may also then get the pleasure of seeing the girl struggle to find a companion/livery for her own horse on short notice
