Sorry, got questionitis here. A friend of mine rents a paddock and there have always been other horses in the neighbouring field, but now they have gone so her horse is on its own. It s a fairly neurotic ned. Do you think it will eventually settle on its own? Friend and I both dislike seeing horses on their own so she was debating getting a companion. Trouble is, the rescue places won't rehome unless you live on site - or at least the ones we have tried so far don't - so thats a dead end. Other ideas?
If any of those ideas included a potential companion in Essex/Herts area, that would be great.

This rescue will re-home if you don't live on site, we have one of their ponies. http://lert.priorywood.com/ and I know they are desperate for some loaners. I've had Blue Cross horses in the past, and my yards have never had anyone living there so I'm sure she can get a companion if she needs to. Some won't home if the fencing is barbed wire though.
I agree, I don't think a horse should be kept alone. Sheep are supposed to work quite well for company, but I think another equine is better. However, beware separation anxiety. If your friend does get a companion she needs to introduce them, but be taking them away from each other almost within the first hour. And really make a point of working on that until they don't seem bothered at all. I've just done this for two weeks with my new horse and it's paid dividends.

That's great that you have found one straight away - just one comment; make sure that the companion is happy to be left in the field on its own. I know a few people who have ended up with all sorts of extra troubles on getting a companion who can't be left, so they then get a companion for it LOL!!

Thanks Tia, I remined friend to ask that! I'm lucky cos my little pony is OK on his own, but if I take him out I have to boot the mare up, put a grill across her stable door and pray!
