Goats are very sweet - but they do pee and crap every where - and I did find that only one of our lot would let the goat come anywhere near them!!! Also you do need to be careful with how much grass you let goats eat - and you have to trim their feet regularly.
Pigs - will have the facility to turn you muddy field in to a proper quagmire!!!
Sheep - again crapping everywhere - but will eat grass well
Cows - tail eating - not good!!
Donkey - ok - as long you keep on top of worming etc
Shettie - personally - probably my most likely route if I needed a companion.

Otherwise - keep your eye out in the local papers see if anyone has a little ponio that needs a home as a companion?

Archie goes out with a Ram at the new yard, hes the only horse that dosent attack it!! They love each other and Panda (the Ram!) follows him around everywhere

Shetlands are a nightmare! Cute, adorable and far more hassle than most horses. Not only are they masters at going under/through fences, they are prone to lami. Whilst completely adorable I'd think you would be better off with a slightly bigger pony.

I have a little welsh mountain as a companion (don't think I could dupe my horse with anything else I'm afraid!) and he's very low maintenance, he comes in at night with my boy so doesn' need any rugs, just a couple of sections of hay and a scoop of happy hoof, feet trimmed every other time my boys shod so about £80 / year, worming when my boys done, but half a dose. I was given him as a companion as his knee is knackered so, so far hasn't cost me much at all.

I have a sheep in my field, they keep the grass down/even but unfortunately snoopy chases him

Winston likes him but tbh if i took one way they wouldnt settle with just a sheep for company.
Id go for a shettie.
Cullohill has a shetland for her horse Bud

Pony, native X type
Sheltand escape and get overweight

All thw other species have different requirements , eg ear tagging, movement licences, dipping etc,
and some horses are terrified of donkeys.
