Hi everyone
My 9 y/o TB has just been diagnosed with PPID.
I've not even had him a year and was really hoping to get out this summer to small unaffiliated dressage comps or other small shows.

Does anyone else compete (even small shows) a horse/pony with PPID? I don't want to push him or make his condition worse but I've never competed before and as he's my first horse I'd have liked to have done a few little ones with him :frown3:

Thanks

As long as he is fit and well in himself then I wouldn't see any reason not to get out unaffiliated competing - just play it by ear.
Be aware that prascend is a banned substance under FEI rules, so technically rules you out of affiliated competing.

We competed a Cushings pony very successfully for about 4 years. Sadly we would not be able to do so now as the Pony Club follows FEI guidelines with both Prascend and pergolide banned. But you certainly won't make him any worse. Go ahead and compete him!

My 22 year old has had cushings for the last 4 years and I still compete him! We did take him off pergolide though as it was having no effect on his levels whatsoever so that does mean I can do BD and RC stuff but competing him has had no adverse effects on him at all. He still show jumps, events and does BD all fine! If he is on pergolide/prascend, you won't be able to affiliate but he will be able to do all unaffiliated shows quite happily! :)

Ah that's annoying that it's a banned substance :-( I probably would never get to affiliated level but it's a shame that it's completely ruled out. At least i can still do small local stuff.

He seems well in himself and i'm trying to fitten him up as much as possible - he's only just started on the prascend this weekend so hopefully in 6-8 weeks i'll see how much of a difference there is in him on the medication.

Does anyone know why it's a banned substance?

My cushings pony is still absolutely full of herself and does a bit of everything still. She does go downhill sometimes when her blood levels change but once the treatment of Prascend is altered slightly she goes back to normal but it can be monitored with regular blood tests by the vet.
Does anyone know the consequences of doing PC teams/BE80 with a pony on Prascend?

Its a banned substance !!! just as likely to get tested at 80 as advanced so its your risk!

I use equine America's cushtreat for my old pony and have found that it works really well. If his levels aren't crazily high then it may be worth a try?

If you are found to be competing on a banned substance then the penalty is fine/ban etc.
