Competition Schoolmasters

I loaned my boy before we bought him to ensure he was 100% what I wanted before we paid for him.

We were looking for an absolute school master which also meant we were looking at slightly older horses (hence we also wanted to have full vetting, x rays etc etc before buying). I also wanted something without too many BD points though which made things harder.

In the end, we found a PSG level dressage horse still in novice level points who'd also jumped Newcomers BSJA and has a fair few BE points wracked up. He was 12 when we bought him, but flew through a 5 star vetting and had clear x-rays (which we actually didnt even have to pay for!). In the time we had him on loan, he went to a couple of BD shows, someone else popped him round a BSJA for me and basically did as much as was possible

He's a bit older than is "fashionable" these days, but i can literally do anything with him without any fuss. He's absolutly fabulous and although i tended to go with the younger horses in the past, he's completly changed my view and and id never hesitate to go for a school master again.

Have another friend who's loaning (long term) a grand prix level horse as well at the mo. She's just come out of ponies and didnt have a horse ready so loaned one instead.

My sister leased an ex-advanced eventer to Pony Club and prenovice on. He was a proper horse compared to her 15hander who I had just stolen off her!

Can I ask why you are asking?

Thanks guys,

I had decided to buy a youngster next spring to bring on but coiuld really use more experience eventing & with D's arthritis I doubt I will try to go to novice with him.

I was looking at schoolmasters (BE at nov/inter), but the going rate seems to be anything between 7.5k & 15 so I wondered if leasing for a season or 2 was a more sensible option. I already have 2 that will be with me for life and couldn't afford to have another with us forever.

Tierra, You lucky thing!!!!
Getting a PSG Dressage horse on loan for a while would be fantastic experience.
I have my own yard in Cornwall and as we are so far from the madding crowd it would be very unlikely if someone would loan their horse to such a remote place.
I have a super 8 year old mare by Donnersong and hope to take her through the grades but I lack the experience at the top end even though I am BHS qualified. If you know of anything please email me.
Good luck with yours.
