Seriously, 5 riders per NF??? Guess it will be PF and co, can't see William cutting it in a ballot on points! Need to find a back up CCI** preferably not a million miles away, in the school hols, and in the first half of the season!

I just read the email too! Must have missed that bit. Had a small wibble over the entry fee (300 euros) as we're hoping to go abroad later in the season and had budgeted on slightly less, but hopefully may be different for CCI* or CIC** - or perhaps the exchange rate might improve??

How shall I word it to convince them they "need" a "clever polo/MGA/eventer/jumpy pony" to quote Megan2006's very apt description of William?

Not sure if it'll work though

will BE keep a reserve list? because as i said there are several national federations who have to e invited but wont take up their spaces. i should think ten will still go from here

Let me write the letter, it'll be oh-so-professional and bound to convince them

I think they took about 15 ish riders last year and the year before so well worth applying although they say 5 per federation they will fill the places. It might be 300 euros but they really look after you. They put on a stunning lunch every day for owners, riders and grooms ....fabulous event one of my faves and only a couple of hours off the ferry at Calais.

Thanks Milicent - can I be cheeky and ask for any feedback re. Jardy? hoping to go there for either CIC** or CCI* depending on how season is going.

oh yes, the lunch. i had temporarily forgotten the lunch. and the stables are permenant being as it is on a racecourse and its hard standing for the trucks so whats not to like.
and dont know if jardy do lunch but th rest of the place is nice though i havent been for the event only showjumping.

Sure can...Jardy it's just off the Peripherique in central Paris in the grounds of a large French riding school - The dressage and showjumping are on a surface as most of the french events are and have various all weather warmups. The 2 star cross country isn't hugely long and it's fairly flat with the exception of the odd mound they've built and is fairly enclosed - there's not miles of hacking to do. The 2 star is very fair cross country but the showjumping will be influential. The 1 star can sometimes have a couple of strong fences. They park you in a car park and it's temporary stabling or at least it was when I went and good facilities as far as washing off areas etc. The weather is usually great but the evening catering I think left a little to be desired and you had to cross the road to the local tennis club to have a hot shower if you don't have one on board your lorry. They do run a shuttle up to the main arena and have good prize money. If you have a car Versaille is fabulous and loads of bars (yes I remember the French rugby team well!!) & restaurants and the palace is stunning...hope this helps. I'd go again if I fancied a trip across the channel in my jods!

the temp stabling was there for showjumping last year l so i presume it is the same set up. the shower thing would have been a pain and as millicent says it is nce to have the dressage and showjumping on a surface and the arenas were good. i think it is Pierre Durrand (very famous french showjumper) who is in charge of the place so he would realise the precious jumpers wouldnt come if the surfaces werent good.
i thought the catering was a bit lacking in general as far as grooms went because its a bit of a walk to the catering by the main arena but to be honest now i know that i would just take more lorry food so its not a bother. and the car park is a proper one with hard standing and plenty power outlets so even if the weather isnt great it isnt like paddling round weston in the mud! i thought it was a pretty good place tbh.

Thanks both of you. Hmmm, I seem to remember the Perpherique being a bit hairy. Never mind, I expect Baydale will be driving so I shall just close my eyes! Thanks for the info. Compiegne does sound nicer but it comes too early in the season to qualify and as you say it can only be LESS muddy than the UK:

Blair 2008!

I think we'll be taking plenty supplies to save money anyway so distance to food doesn't matter too much. I did once grrom at Royal Dublin and use the rugby club facilities there for a week though, so I suspect I know EXACTLY what you mean Milicent

that looks attractive gamebird, nearly as nice as blenheim!! personally i can put up with alot if there is good standinds for the lorries. as least you can get out of the mud (if there is any) temporarily!!

Mummm I've just remembered why I liked going abroad so much....Compeigne going is lovely and sandy... a bit like Tweseldown but not as soft. The cross country runs through the local park so you will gallop down a straight pathway and then do a 90 degree handbreak turn to a fence so if you don't have a good turner forget it!

Oi, you're going to be navigating so eyes wide open please. I could try my "I'm bigger than you so get out of my way" attitude to lorry driving, but I doubt that will cut any ice with the French.

And I take it our OHs aren't being invited to support us at Jardy then, on the off chance some rugby players (in June

) or tennis players are in the vicinity?

Nope, my turning is not good, not good at all. We're working on it but I don't expect miracles. Jardy looked twisty enough, though if he never gets enough space to let the handbrake fully off then the turning isn't quite so bad!

Yes, it definitely came from Ireland and I'm sure the 3* winner came out of it (by way of Portugal somehow)! My friend was grooming for them. It was very swish, I was very jealous in my tent

Ah well my name is now officially down as groom for Compiegne and forms have been sent back to BE! Fingers crossed everyone who wants to go gets in!!

Hmmm, Jardy or Tatts? I know which will be drier... Also cheaper ferry, probablytcheaper entries, prize money won't be as good but somehow don't think I need to concern myself about that
wink.gif
... Only problem might be the two mad old bats with a carthorse and a giant who are bound to lead me astray with cocktails, rugby players etc...

Decision made?

Re Compiegne - I saw that on the email too, but can't believe they'll turn people away if it's not full and there may not be that much competition for spaces as its quite early to be fit/qualified/confident enough to get your entries in...
