I have a mare on loan for my OH. She's 19 next month and used to be a fabby SJ but is now enjoying a quieter life hacking around and being treated like a queen.

Anyway her owner brought some pictures of her to the yard last night of the mare in her younger days and I couldn't believe it was her.

Currently she is jet black (ala Black Beauty) with a little white around her muzzle. However 10 years ago she was liver chestnut????????

And 5 years ago she had turned bright bay after she had her foal?????

It's definately her in both pictures as she has quite a distinctive head.

I had no idea horses got darker with age. Anyone experience this?

My first pony was a lovely dark strawberry roan in the summer and grey in winter. You have never seen anything so tatty-looking as when his winter coat was falling out in handfulls leaving his dark summer coat underneath.
