Complete worming confusion

I have to confess to being pretty clueless about worming

my previous yard wormed the horses regularly for us, and my current yard said they do (George was wormed when he arrived), but I want to ask the YO what programme she uses. Trouble is she could tell me anything and I wouldn't know if it was right or wrong or ineffective. I have tried to look some programmes up on the internet and now i'm more confused than ever

All I know is that it needs to be done and that you should use wormers with different ingredients each year.

Help! Has anyone got a simple answer!

Worming Calendar

February: Treat for Cyathastome larvae (5-day fenbendazole e.g. Panacur ™, or one dose of moxidectin e.g. Equest™). Then choose your class of wormer to use for the rest of the year, dosing at regular intervals. With the exception of the following specific treatments:

September: Treat for tapeworms (praziquantel, or double dose with pyrantel embonate e.g. Pyratape P™ or Strongid-P™ or Equitape)

October: Repeat treatment for Cyathastome larvae

December/January: Treat for bots (ivermectin e.g.Eqvalan™ Furexel™ Panomec™ Equimax™, or moxidectin e.g. Equest™)

The table below shows the class of wormers and which worms they are effective against:

if you use Equest Pramox in Spring and Autumn that covers tapeworms as well as everything else. And then normal Equest in Summer and Winter. 13 week worming pattern instead of pumping chemicals in your horse every 6 weeks and currently no known resistance.

Some yard offer worm counting where horses are only wormed in Spring and Autumn against tape and everything else and don't worm in Summer and Winter provided worm counts low.

I saw the 1 year pack of equest and thought that looked a useful way to do things, but surely the following year you would have to use something different.............or not?

Not. with these two wormers you can use them for three years following, then one year off, then back.

moxidectin is a useful worming drug. Equest in mid January then in mid summer. Equest Pramox in spring and autumn.
