As some of you my TB has recently been diagnosed with a sinus infection, had a injection of antibiotics and anti inflammatorys, and started on a course of bute and antibiotics (can't remember the name.. Norodine?) which he's had as prescribed. This has been since monday.

However today I've noticed he has a massive (fist sized) fluidy lump on the left hand side of his neck. It's warm to the touch and it's come up rather quickly. Never seen anything like it before. I've rung vet and he's coming out first thing sat (the one who diagnosed the sinus infection).

Any opinions/advice welcome.

yeah that's what I've been thinking.. it's on the side of his neck, there's no mark there at all. The only thing I can think of is it's pus and it's connected to his sinuses, or it's reaction to the antibiotics. Just hope it doesn't get any bigger. He's not had any antibiotics tonight, just his bute (as prescribed.)

I take it the lump isn't anywhere near the throat?
I hope you get it sorted. My mare spent months in hospital last year with sinus problems - they are a bugger to clear up. Horses don't just have one set of sinuses and they don't all connect with each other, so it can be quite complicated. Is the discharge unilateral or bilateral?

just in the right nostril, however the lump is on the left side. It's more on the side as opposed to underneath. He's eating ok, seems ok in himself. Just hope it's nothing too serious.

Just don't let the vet tell you that its definitely not a fractured tooth. Mine was at a major vet hospital for a week, then sent home having been told that it was just sinusitis. It got worse to the point where pints (and I mean pints) of yellow snot was coming out of her right nostril. By the time we got her back to hospital the infection was so bad that the x-rays couldn't see through the snot. She was trephined for a few days and then when some of the pus had drained away they x-rayed again and finally found a fractured tooth. It had been there so long that the tooth pulp had eroded completely. The infection wouldn't clear and she developed pseudomonas and a streptococcal infection and was in hospital for over two months. When they tried to remove the tooth, the crown fractured and they had to cut a bone flap in the side of her face and remove the tooth via repulsion under general anaesthetic. When she came home she looked like she had been hit by a bus - her face was totally deformed. A year down the line and the only telltale sign are a few white hairs and when you touch it you can feel that the bone isn't even, but we nearly lost her due to it not being found soon enough. I'm sure yours will be easier to solve, but just be aware that it can take ages. If you want any more info, feel free to PM me. x

Did the vet inject bute intraveanously because even if you get a tiny bit outside the vein it can cause a really nasty reaction. Good luck with the sinus problem, they can be really difficult to clear up I am afraid. Dont spend too much money with your vet, it may be worth a referral as it may cost less in the long run.

No it was just a simple injection, he's had it before and no reaction. Tonight when I looked at him, his glands are right up (left side), the lump appears to be growing (only a small bit). More heat in it too. Also I'm noticing a solid like lump on the right side of his neck now too :( He's eating/drinking fine, but he has dropped weight. He's still going out as per instructions from vet.
Got vet first thing tomorrow.

so... vet's been. He's a bit puzzled as lump is rather high up in the neck, almost too high up for a reaction to a injection. He said the jugular vein is still visible, and that's not involved in anyway. He did wonder whether there was a bit of dirt on the needle which went in, or there's some bruising... but doesn't think so as Handy stood rock still!
He's a tad confused, so we're going to monitor it, keep on with the antibiotics/bute, turn out and feed from the floor. He'll ring tues, if still there he'd like to do an ultrasound. He's sending me some gel to put on it too... see if that helps! He was in a different car to usual and said something about 'oh I left my x-ray stuff in the other car' which is making me wonder....

looked at it again today, it's still there, and very warm to touch. Vet who saw him last week isn't there tomorrow, so will speak to him on tues. Will see what is said then, and will take it from there. He's one of the senior vets, not sure quite what to do next..still none the wiser as to what it is...

Have also taken extra precautions and asked all staff/people who come into contact with him to wash hands and use alcohol gel after handling him. I'm on a large yard and its for the benefit of everyone else... he's definately not contagious!
