I have a wonderful 10 acre field that I can do what I like with and its a paradise really, (grass livery) little schooling area etc... BUT I have to go through another field to get to it and ride out of etc... What really gets me down is that the field has horses on it that are negelected, hardly fed and the mud is horrendous, they lie in it without rugs etc and its just sad, so before i can get my guys out or take a bucket of food (get mugged)I first have to secure the others before we can safely leave the field, everyday I am sad and appalled and it just gets me really down... the RSPCA have been called many times but nothing changes. Because things are better in the summer months I perservere through the winter but my wrinkles are increasing cus I worry and fret so much and start thinking about moving again but I know that other livery yards etc have their problems so I stay put, plus my horses are extremely happy. I feel like pu ..ch....ing her sometimes for the ignorance and making me feel s..t, but she does not know it, I feel too faced but I keep good relations so that I can at least feed them now and again.
So the point of the post is.... Do you put up with things and compromise as there is no such thing as a perfect livery yard/grass??

Well I think there is no such thing as a perfect or faultless livery.

But the compromise you mention is more extreme then what I am thinking of. I would find it terribly hard to let go of too, are there are other welfare organisations that might do something about this neglect if the RSPCA are not?

What is the condition of these horses like?

Poor but not emaciated however thats due to others feeding them sometimes, would be worse if left solely the the owner. Problem is that when horses live on the edge their suffering is long drawn out as they are not poor enough to be taken away if you get my meaning.

When you say you are DIY grass livery, is there a YO?

Could they force the issue with her and perhaps put out round bales of hay and add it to the cost of her field rent?

We both own our respective parcels of land so no boss to turn to I am afraid, I can't change things because I can't change her, there are no feelings of shame just blind to their plight, its almost like a status thing because they are not ridden, more of a burden really, I did suggest why dont you sell them, she said she could'nt because she loves them.... internally incensed at this point.

Hi,
I know how you feel, its difficult.
I would stick with your field, if your horses are happy in it.
I live next door to people with horses in a similar state. They arent cared for, unrugged and not fed. They are marginally surviving, but look awful.Rspca dont do anything about it either. Nothing changes. But what can you do, its not your responsibilty and if the appropriate charity wont intervene, your stuck. Unlike you, we are not on good terms with them anyway, so we cant go and feed them, or be involved. So atleast the owner is not so totally unapproachable. Maybe you could suggest, putting in some hay, etc, if she just pays you the ,money?

I know it is hard but I would personally stay out of it. Try and stick with the field but I would not be offering to feed etc, unless she is going to pay you. I know it is hard but why should you look after her horses when she clearly does not want to. Do you want the extra hassle ? and responsibility ? You will get to a stage where you feel like a mug for doing all the work and getting no pleasure of the. If you can talk to her, why not suggest she loans them to someone - that way she still owns them but they will be cared for and happier.?

Get in touch with the WHW, RSPCA not much good in these situations. Eplain the problem an d how it is stressing you out to see these horses in their condition. they are horse people and understand what is needed.

I would contact WHW (ILPH) and ask them to visit. The law has changed and keeping animals in conditions which may cause them suffering is sufficient for them to take action i.e. the animals don't have to suffer slow starvation.

make a path to my land?

Thats a good idea but it would be reducing her land so not likely.
Anyhow I have been riding with my son this afternoon and feel a little better for it, sometimes things just seem rather black at times, I think its best that I carry on keeping good relations and feeding them as and when I can. Like I say my field is a little paradise, 2 mins up the road and the hacking is great. Its is the winter months that take their toll. This situation has been going on for 5 years and every winter I feel the same. I am a happy person and rather bubbly etc so dont want to sound like a moanin mini, I suppose I have to change the way I think and not let it get me down but its hard not to let your emotions take over. Thanks for all your replies, appreciate the thoughts

Wouldnt hurt though to widen the charity calls though.... so JR recommended (WFW?) and how about ILPH? and take photos to back up before the weather changes and the condition improves!
