I am concerned about the welfare of a dog. This dog is a large guarding breed. He is eight months old and has had his tail docked and ears cropped. He is straying near my horses field. The owner has no idea about dogs and the dog is scared of the owner. Hes got out several times now and been found both on a neighbours land and near my horses. There are busy roads nearby and I am worried that the poor dog will either get run over and cause a accident or get in with livestock and end up getting shot. He is only a pup really. Would the dog warden do anything? I doubt Rspca will. I fear the owner is possibly beating the dog too . I have already caught the dog and returned to owner once. If I catch him again would I be better to get the dog warden?

The owner does not deserve the dog and the dog deserves for someone to step up and rescue it from a horrible situation. As above, if you are safely able to do so, catch the poor thing and take to the dog warden, you don't have to say you know who it belongs to, just that it has been straying near your property. Trouble is though, with cropped ears, and if it is of type, will it even be rehomed at all?

I'd also engineer a situation where he has to be sprung from a pound or kennels. Will hit the owner in the pocket, draw attention to the C&D issue (and on the breeder) and if the owner can't or won't collect, he'll either be rehomed or PTS and, sad, but he'll no longer be at risk.

Wardens here are bound to report and enforce welfare legislation and the council brings offenders to court.

If it's an actual licenced guard dog it legally can't be left alone on a premises.
I doubt very much its licenced. Its only 8 months. Im worried about its welfare as the way it reacted to its owner I would say its at the very least had some tellings off if not worse. Not only that if he keeps getting out hes either going to get run over or get himself in trouble.

Whilst it's entirely possible, if it's the breed I think it is, it might just be nervy/can't cope with stress. No point in upsetting yourself unless you know for sure.

I have thought about RSPCA but do not have much faith in them to be honest. Will the owner be asked about docked tail and cropped ears if he gets handed in to dog warden? I have a strong suspicion that the dog has been bough as a guard dog.
I would have thought so. Dogs with cropped ears should have all the paperwork that goes with having been imported, as it is illegal to crop ears in this country. Imported dogs should have had a series of vaccinations and health checks prior to leaving their home country and have the paperwork to prove that. If the dog warden is doing their job properly they will ask for proof of all that and proof of ownership, address matching the chip etc, before handing the dog over.
